rear hub recommendations/bearings

I have a bike hub with M475 rear hub (I think). The local tech reckon it needs replacing. Possibly something to do with the 'goat head' (sorry translation from Indonesian, I don't know the correct term)

That being so they were saying to get a Novatec hub, the reason being (they said) that they used some kind of 'bearings' whereas the Shimano used some other type of 'bearings'. I'm not quite sure what they mean I think possibly ball bearings vs cartridge?

Anyway, able to shed any light on this, and what hub to get? I'm basically just riding on broken roads, stones, etc., I suppose I want durability? There's a lot of rain and mud here (in Indonesia), so that's possibly a consideration?

There were saying I would have to change the 'plate' I think for the disc brakes? Something to do with how it attaches?

    Can you identify which part is the issue ( not sure where a 'goat head' is in a hub!!!).if you buy another m475 hub, you'll get the bearings, freehub, qr that you can put in your existing one on your bike ( with a bit of grease), see park tools website for rebuilding a hub, or replacing a freehub (if this is the issue). I've done both myself and it's no big deal. Have been through 2 freehubs and replaced the bearings once on my m475 in 5 1/2 years, riding in all conditions, so they last ok.

    M475 hubs can be found for under £20. Just buy one and swap the worn parts.
    I like Shimano hubs, the bearings are serviceable and last year's with a tiny amount of maintenance.

    I assume the goat head is the bit with spoke holes in.

    They were saying if I buy a new Shimano hub I would need to change the (disc brake?) plate because of the way it connects to the hub.

    The Novatec hub is around £60 I think. Not sure if it is worth spending more on a better hub than the M475?

    It's not much of an improvement. To fit it you'll need a complete wheel rebuild with new spokes.

    Worst case is to buy a new hub and relace it it, at least you won't need £20 of new spokes.

    Shimano hubs come as 6 bolt disc and splined, they just need to get the right one......I think I'd be trying a different shop as these are either out to rip you off or sound like idiots, neither is a good thing for you!
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    The bike shop are recommending novatec hubs as they will use sealed cartridge bearings compared with shimano that use cup and cone shells where you have little tiny ball bearings that run in grease.

    I would say just buy another shimano hub and get the shop to re lace the wheel. I used to use xt hubs on my wheels and they were fine as long as the cones were adjusted correctly to stop any dirt getting under the seals.

    From the look of your picture you use centre lock hubs, buying another shimano hub you will be able to re use the disc which will save you a little money.

    The manufacturers spec for the original part says 10x135mm. Do I have to match both those numbers?
