I want to know which bike is better. The avanti black thunder 7.2 or the scott aspect 970. This is my first mountain bike which i will use for getting to school and a bit of mountain riding. Here are the links. If there are other choices that are better and in the same price and in melbourne, than feel free to suggest.

Neither is great to be honest.

the XCT fork on the scott may have a damper (it may or may not, the description doesn't tell us) which would just about make it usable as a mountain bike, the cheap fork on the avanti (their own brand I assume) makes even the pretty poor XCT look good (horribly flexible, dreadful seal and bush and it will be dead in about 6 months), so of the two, the Scott by a knockout in the first round.

You can test the Scott for a damper, lockout the forks and try and compress them, if the fork is absolutely rigid the fork has no damper, if it allows some small movement it has a damper.

You wouldn't drive a car across rough ground with no dampers in the suspension!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

I agree, neither are great, but an extra $80 over the Scott will see some nice improvements in this bike:

Has the aforementioned hydraulic damper but also hydraulic disc brakes and an 8 speed cassette and freehub body. Not only wider ranging gears, but a stronger, more reliable hub/axle.
