Looking for a CX bike which I will use on local trails, perhaps even the odd CX race, and also commuting. For commuting I'd prefer to be able to attach mudguards so eyelets would be handy. Hydro brakes are also on the wish list.

I don't need it immediately, could wait until Nov, but if a stonking deal were available I'd pull the trigger earlier.

What would you suggest?

Buy 2 separate bikes. Everyone I know that has tried to do this has ended up with separate winter/CX bikes as they get sick of swapping tyres and taking guards on and off.
  • I've ended up with one bike and two wheelsets + clipon mudguard
  • Depends if you are happy to commute on cx tires or not. They would wear out pretty quick. Or if you are happy to keep switching tires. There are plenty of sub-1000 cx bikes out there, some with hydro. Many of the lower end bikes have mudguard fittings. There are plenty of mudguards available for bikes without though.

Two wheelsets makes sense, or I get used to swapping tyres.

Down to £1099 now. So get that. And some different wheels. Use those for commuting as they're bombproof. Get something decent for better days and cross. Get Hyper Voyager or Kojak to put on the commute wheels. Keep the supplied tyres for light cross but add some others. Still way under budget.

I've been hunting around for a cross bike for about £1000 and ended up with that Cannondale (Ultegra CAADX 2016). Seems to be the best equiped at that price.

Very happy with my Kinesis, but that would be a frame and build it up job though. You are more than welcome to pop round and have a play if you like. The Canondale Bender links to does look a good buy though. Stay that far under budget and buy a second set of wheels.
  • My CAADX 105 is tremendous so far. It feels quite different in some ways to the SuperX.

As near as I can describe it, it feels like super light steel. It feels more like my Ritchey than my Bivio. The Ultegra should have that same feel but with the advantage of the superb brakes.

Wow, that's a bloody brilliant deal

Thanks. I had thought about Kinesis but that Cannondales looks ridiculously perfect for the money!

That it does, I'd buy it if I were in the market.
  • Have a look at the Norco Threshold 2017 - https://www.evanscycles.com/norco-thres ... e-EV277746

Hydraulic Disc Brakes and a front thru-axle and being a bit picky but a threaded BB mean that this should be reliable, better front wheel stiffness due to the extra security the thru-axles provide and hopefully no creaking as the BB is threaded. Not trying to rubbish Cannondale by any means but I'm really tempted by the carbon version of the Norco with SRAM Rival 1x...

And you get some spare money for better wheels, finishing kit or beer!

Anyone looked at the Boardman CX 9.00? £1250 and seems to tick all my boxes.
  • I bought the CAADX Ultegra today. Great bike for the money, took it for a spin and was very happy with its overall speed, comfort and agility.

Special mention to Pedalon, a great little shop with really helpful people. Can definitely recommend them.

    Thanks for all your suggestions.
  • That's where my SuperX came from. Good bunch of people

Very nice, I shall keep an eye out for it.
  • Have removed all the shite that bikes ship with now - a bazillion reflectors, bell, multiple warning stickers etc. Gonna take it for a spin tomorrow or Friday to settle on saddle height, bar angles etc. Decisions decisions.
  • I like the saddle on mine (CAADX 105) but same one. I also like the Spoon on my X. But I think I might prefer the flatness of the Cannondale branded one.
