Looks like summers packed its bags and headed South.

Lots of funeral preparation related jobs to do today. Buying wine for the wake is not too tough mind and the bonus is two days off work. Wednesday could be busy though.

  • Saw my neurosurgeon last week. All fine he said. Go do normal stuff he said. So I did.

Lost most of yesterday in resulting shredded nerves agony. Today *marginally* better. Lovely day at least. Tinkered about in garage most of the day, swapping brakes between a couple of retro MTB frames.

Looks like this recovery thing is going to be slower than promised.

    Morning folks,
Suspected that may have been the cause of Spinner's cursing yesterday, that's dull. Hope it doesn't take too much longer.
Busy weekend, took the lad to see Bath Uni on Saturday, interesting day. He liked it, we thought Southampton was nicer. But it is of course his choice. Day of doing stuff yesterday, but didn't manage to do what I intended of course.
Took the girl in to school for 9 am this morning then rode in from there, at least the park was open by that point. Reasonably busy in here, hoping it doesn't last. I reckon I could stop working now and still have done more by the end of the month than anyone else. Tempting...

What happened to the Hippocratic Oath in modern medicine? Ok, I know, I know it's not an actual line from the original version, nor is it specifically stated in the modernised version of the oath, but the line "First, Do No Harm" is a generally accepted tenet for the medical profession. It's indirectly implied anyway in the "if you can't do any good, then do nothing" bit of Hippocrates' text.

So why am I here 6 weeks later, feeling at least 300% worse than before I went in at all? Not just about the same, not slightly better, slightly worse, but a whole several orders of magnitude less good than I was. And so far, it's gone only one way and that's downhill. Newsflash Doc; it is not normal for a grown man to end most days reduced to a barely functional wreck in tears trying whichever drug will work to at least get some sleep.

I have a special talent for making stupid decisions, but in this case I've exceeded even my own stellar record in GMFU's when it comes to my personal welfare. I keep telling my better half to just find a skip and chuck me in it, save us both a lot of grief in the long run. At the very least, keep me away from the sodding specialists and hospitals.

    [/Rant over]

I am very aware there are people on here who have been through far worse than I, and in no way are my problems anywhere near as threatening as theirs. Still relentlessly frustrating though. Apologies for the rant. Just ignore me, some dumb-ar$ed fool from the colonies. :D

The fact that other people have gone through worse won't make you feel any better, not unless you really are some kind of particularly perverse sadist.
I will say that I think it's worse in many cases for the other half/parent/significant other that is watching the person suffering. This may not be the case with you as it is pain rather than illness. I know that watching my daughter still really struggling with this headache and dizziness is driving me mad, I just don't know which way to turn and feel completely helpless. I wish I could take the headache from her. But when I was on chemo I was just ill which was quite easy really, it was the Mrs that had to get on with everything and deal with me being ill. People told me afterwards that I was brave. Utter nonsense, I think she had it far worse than me.

He's old and FUBAR, spinal surgery not gone well. That, and he lives on the wrong side of the world.

I went through hell, The only reason I got through hell is that I was told that "If we do this and if we do that, you could lead a normal life". Which was utter bollox and they lied through their teeth, the b4stards but it was the thought that there was light at the end of the tunnel that got me through. I was young and I had no dependencies but if I had, it would have been 10 times worse.

Pain is different. When you are in pain, time stands still. Pain killers only serve to give you bad dreams and leave you spaced out so I know where you are WS and it's not a good place.

    Silly question time mate:

When the Doc said 'Go do normal stuff' did you over cook it?
You mentioned a physio/PT, have you discussed a long term plan, one step at a time?
Are there any exercises (hydro therapy) that may be better for you in the interim?
Have you got a TENS machine?

Spinner, pain is horrible. I gave would do a lot to avoid the problems I had with sciatica, thankfully many years ago.

Seems to be some sort health sh1tstorm brewing here. Brother in laws wife over here from the States for the MIL's funeral just got a call that her mother was taken into intensive care today and they might have to decide whether to pull the plug. Like frikkin buses :(

Exactly. That was bad enough and Spinner is in a different league that he definitely doesn't want to be in.

I'm not going to get into a health version of The Four Yorkshiremen' with you as it's one that I won't win for a change.

Why would they have to pull the plug? Has her insurance company decided she is beyond economical repair? I'd be more careful about how you phrase that though.
Good luck with tomorrow, I'm sure it'll be a hard day.
More importantly, you lot have it easy. I had to ride home in a light drizzle.

I'm keeping gob firmly shut here. All I know is her old dear is 90, very frail and her blood pressure has dropped through the floor and is getting worse. They don't seem to be able to restore it.

I was just reading something about American doctors saying how lucky we are to have the NHS and how bad their sytems are and couldn't resist having a dig. Stevo will take it in the manner intended, even I'm not daft enough to say that to his sister in law.

He's right, he wouldn't dare. She would definitely have him in a Sumo competition.

I may well have, but sweeping the driveway and cleaning the leaves out of the pool isn't high up the list of taxing exercises in my book.
I'm back to the physio this week - he's very hard to get in to see if you're out of the "regular" patient list for a while, works with a lot of the professional footballers (rugby) here so is used to people with banged up bones and joints. Will be interesting to hear his opinion - I know he's had plenty of patients who've had this before.
    Not tried a TENS thing.
