Title says it all.

My nomination: Tindersticks. First four albums almost perfect; second a gold plated classic

It's just a hill. Get over it.

  • Sorry to spoil the thread so early, but I like the Tindersticks...
But I'll throw in The Lemonheads. I'm hearing perfect indie pop classics, everyone else is just getting annoyed by Evan Dando.

XtC - Post punk perfection, callously ignored by the majority of the record buying public

Split Enz - New Zealand's finest, only downside is that they turned into Crowded House which isn't the biggest downside now, is it?

I'll see your Lemonheads and I'll raise you The Julianna Hatfield Three!

The Lemonheads were cracking, 'It's A Shame About Ray' is one of the albums of the nineties.

    The Kingsbury Manx

I have all their albums. They're all great. No one else I know has even a remotely passing nod to them

    Sorry, I like XTC.

China Drum, Garageland, Yumi Yumi, Charge 69, C0ck Sparrer, Anti-Flag, Consumed, Divokej Bill, Tankcsapda (OK, the last 2 are cheating a bit as they're popular in their home countries)

I love Tindersticks too. My all time favourite band of all time. Durutti Column is one I seem to like but nobody else has heard of.

Loop. Thee Hypnotics. Who you may ask? Well there you go.

    Sometimes. Maybe. Possibly.

  • I liked a bit of Loop back in the day, Spacemen 3 too. Saw Spiritualized a few years ago at the Hackney Empire, it was full, so I guess not only me that likes them! How about Moon Duo in that vein?

    Shreikback.
No doubt there will be some enlightened, but not a band I can talk about without people saying "Who?".
The above may be fact, or fiction, I may be serious, I may be jesting.
I am not sure. You have no chance.

I saw XTC live at Leeds Poly and the missus loves Split Enz/ Crowded House.

    The Macc Lads.

'Ramones on a budget' style of music and way off the end of the non-PC scale in a very tongue in cheek way. They even got an article written about them in the Guardian:
    https://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2015/jun/23/cult-heroes-the-macc-lads-satirists-not-knuckle-draggers

Watching them live as a student was something else.

    Manu Chao and Sol'Jibe

rarely I come across people that have heard of either
  • Anathema, always put on a really special performance. Lucky enough to see them do an acoustic set at Winchester Cathedral.

Manu Chao everyone must know of some of their songs once you play them.

I don't know anyone that leftfield but a band called La Fleur Fatale have some good tunes I took from a windsurfing film a few years ago.

Saw them loads of times in 85,86,87 but they had a habit of getting banned from playing.Their gig in Rotherham Arts Centre lasted three songs before they were ushered off stage for letting all the fire-extinguishers off.Happy days 8)

Likewise. Saw them at some place in Hammersmith and at a grotty boozer in Fulham that had pub garden furniture nailed to the floor so the mongs couldn't chuck it around :D

'Sweaty Betty' is still my favourite track.

  • The The.
Matt Johnson's criminally underrated IMO and some of the tracks off Infected and Mind Bomb are unnervingly contemporary yet prescient.
    And beautiful.

Johnny Marr plays guitar... great band...

The future was written by Matt Johnson in 1989

They're 5 miles high as the crow flies
Leavin' vapour trails against a blood red sky
Movin' in from the East toward the West
With Balaclava helmets over their heads, yes!

But if you think that Jesus Christ is coming
Honey you've got another thing coming
If he ever finds out who's hi-jacked his name
He'll cut out his heart and turn in his grave

    Islam is rising
    The Christians mobilising
The world is on its elbows and knees
It's forgotten the message and worships the creeds

It's war, she cried, It's war, she cried, this is war
Drop your possessions, all you simple folk
You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes
You will thank the good lord for raising the union jack
You'll watch the ships out of harbour
And the bodies come floating back

One of the best bands ever. Matt Johnson is a genius in my humble opinion. So prophetic is Armageddon Days. I mean he even calls the recent nonsense of police in France insisting that a woman undress! 'You will fight them on the beaches in your underclothes'. Off to see Infected - The Movie this week at the ICA. No you are certainly not alone in your like of The The.

I always thought they were more Anti-Nowhere League than Ramones.
