Scott Sizing Guide Help and Thoughts on Scott Aspect 770

I'm pretty new to mountain biking (started a few months ago and haven't ridden since I was a kid) and am looking to get a proper bike, as the one I have now was a cheap £30 one from some guy on Gumtree.

Was going to get maybe the Carrera Vengeance or the Vulcan, but have now pretty much set my eye on the Scott Aspect 770, which I can get for about £295 if Evans Cycles price matches another site's offer.

Does anyone here own the Scott Aspect 770? How is it?

I won't be riding it on trails or doing jumps or tricks on it, but just riding on the path, a bit of road riding depending on where I am, and some gravel/dirt paths and whatnot.

I'm also a bit confused about Scott's own sizing guide. I'm 5 foot, 9 inches. I seem to be awkwardly in the middle, so not sure if I should go for the medium or the large frame size.

    If it's any help, I've recently bought a Scott Scale 760 in 'medium' size. I'm 5ft 10in and find the size OK now I've got everything adjusted to suit me. General advice seems to be that you can make a small bike bigger but can't make a big bike smaller if the fit isn't quite right. For example, you could change the stem for a longer one. It's also worth mentioning that I found the bars are wider than I was used to, and so the slightly shorter length helps counteract that.

    That Scott is a travesty of a bike - don't do it.

    Bargain bin parts, and AFAIK, a nasty, undamped fork.

    Yup, that Scott isn't worth £250, very nasty bike.
    Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

    Any suggestions or thoughts on better bikes around £300 (can do £350 at a push).

    Have a look at the offers at Halfords (Voodoo Bantu or Carrera Vulcan upwards) or Decathlon (500 series).
    At just over £300 this is simply amazing value, it wouldn't be overpriced at £500.
