You get the GOW banner, then the full splash using the data:/text/html;base64 - if you click either the close button or the X you get sent to the app store to download one of the various betting/casino apps. They are obviously being paid on click through to these pages.

I tried cleaning out my site data and doing a capture, but its hitting so many different sites, otherwise I'd list them.

I can upload screen shots, but can't see how that would help?
  • Screenshots would be helpful if poss!

Thanks for providing this info, it really helps.

We've passed it onto our ad provider who will be able to block it. Please let us know if it happens again (from 17:15 GMT)

You seem to have cracked it - thank you.
I hope so. Please let us know if it happens again

  • Has been covered before but the way the pages bounce around as the Billboards expand is ludicrous. Rather than sticking a plaster on each problem why don't you tap into the goodwill of the experts who use this site? You would get some free consultancy to improve things.
Block people using ad blockers and offer them a subscription service
if you must run intrusive ads then limit them to once a day
The ads are so unfocused that your ad team must be selling them for virtually nothing... Sell less for more.

Not been here for a while because I've been using Chrome and some of the add-ins which help with ad heavy websites. My work laptop was recently rebuilt and Chrome has not been installed. I am using IE9 and the ads are doing the usual dance of the hippopotami. Up and down in the most clumsy of fashions - dreadful.

That said there was two links at the bottom of a page which got my curiosity and I had a look. Basically they take you from an ad heavy forum to a website which is just adverts with a bit of text reflecting the link followed. That's the last time I follow one of these links.

How long can this last before people/businesses realise that this advertising simply doesn't work?
  • Hi Navrig2, Feedback taken on board and passed on. In regards to the ads causing the page to jump, the forum in getting migrated/updated in the coming week or so and we have been working hard to resolve this issue. We look to see some vast improvements in the coming weeks. Best wishes.

This issue has now been addressed - you shouldn't get nearly as much jumpiness from billboards/leaderboards loading as previously, even if you've scrolled down the page.

FFS Fife fox has lost all the adblockers I had as this site is a nuciance with them.

I DO NOT NEED OUTBRAIN RUBBISH ON MY SCREEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

For the love of god why do you people not understand that if I want a bike I'll see what Evans has to offer, if my wife wants make up she can make up (ba-dum-tish) her own mind and I sure as hell aren't going to go home and over a roast chicken dinner say "my god darling, an advert that is totally up your street for L'oreal popped up whilst I was online today"

Now I've had to edit my post because the filters don't like a certain advert blocking service related word however I don't mid the odd one or two but this is rediculous

The advert clickbait tat at the bottom of the screen really does lower the tone. Its either crap about cars or sexist objectifying of women. Sort it out.

If people are bothered about ads then lets get a paid for service. There we can pay to post our daily musings and other vital stuff.

  • Just seen a new type of ad appear, bottom of page hoverer.

Not sure if this is intentional?

Yep. I'm getting them a lot too, but they are new and have appeared around the same time as the pop up redirects, so not sure if they are related or not.
Quite happy to accept them if they are intentional, although a little off topic for the forum!

Waiting for the add team to come back to us formally still.

Getting an incredibly antisocial ad banner for some women's cosmetic (maybeline, maberline, whatever the cr*p is called) appearing regularly (and randomly) at the top of forum threads. The problem is that it includes VERY LOUD MUSIC - so suddenly, late at night, my computer will start pumping out heavy bass through my sound system, potentally disturbing the neighbours (and considerably increasing my stress levels when I'm trying to wind down before bed..) Only way to stop it is to fumble for the volume control / mute..

Surely you can block adverts hi-jacking the sound on a discussion forum??

Completely agree, this stuff is utter sewage and has been there constantly for months or years now (the stuff from "outbrain"). Half of it is highly offensive to the extent it would be unsuitable for minors and/or in breach of the guidelines most forums (including this one) have on posting obscene or disciminatory material.

Got to agree with this , ads at top are ok those at bottom of page are very nasty ,lower tone etc

    iPad, iOS 10
    Whoops who did that!
  • Hey, thanks for feedback on Outbrain. We do have a mega-list of banned topics on Outbrain, but the network is always evolving. I agree with your feedback, but ultimately, it gains clicks and is therefore paying for the site.

As the Outbrain network is always evolving, when you see a particularly nasty ad or NSFW, please either post it here or PM me. I can then have the specific ad/topic placed onto our banned list.

    I hope that helps!

Well, there's one right now that shows a picture of a guy with a self-inflicted 3 inch wide hole in the side of his cheek (something about extreme body modification).
  • I know the one you mean. I will keep an eye out for it and remove when I can grab the URL (I''ve refreshed 10 times and it hasn't popped up yet).

    Thanks again.

It's not what you really want to see after eating your dinner.. ;-)

There was a particularly nasty one a few months ago which appeared to show a graphic photograph of a fatal car crash and promised more of the same if you clicked the link.. I actually complained about it myself to Outbrain and was told that they would remove it, but it cropped up again a few weeks later. Surely that's in breach of something..? Isn't Bike Radar supposed to be suitable for family viewing, as you'd expect from a forum about cycling?
  • Completely agree. We do have a large list of banned topics/URLs and the idea is that the Outbrain ads are of interest to some users. As mentioned before, sometimes a new website or topic will come up which somehow bypasses this list. We strive to remove them when we can! :)
