So, today brings a tough up and down day. Will Tinkoff ride pointlessly on the front for most of the race? Will Sky start to show themselves as they have traditionally done, or are they still using their new secret book of tactics?
Interesting that Movistar, Sky and Orica all have 2 riders in the top ten.
Eurosport coverage proper about to start 90km down, 7 riders have a lead of 2 minutes (little Pete in those 7), Movistar on the front trying to bring the break back.

Atapuma was in the break, lost his front wheel on descent of cat 3. He's now in no man's land between break and peloton. Time gap now 2:300
-
Break - all riders in the break are under 8 minutes of the lead. Carlton has just rattled through them, sure he said Lopez (Sky) in the break too.0

Kennaugh is having quite the Vuelta!
Well played by Sky getting 2 in the break - Lopez is there too. Rest of the escapees are Elissonde, Romain Hardy, Meintjes, Atapuma and Brambilla. So some pretty big names.
Apparently Atapuma's just had a crash though (sounds fairly minor from the CN livetracker.0 -
Peter Kennaugh and David Lopez (Team Sky), Kenny Elissonde (FDJ), Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx - Quick Step), Louis Meintjes (Lampre - Merida) and Romain Hardy (Cofidis) are in the break. Gap now 1:160
-
Movistar have slowed, gap hovering at about 2 mins. Atapuma back in the peloton. That previous time gap 1:16 probably an error.0

Jeandesboz (Direct Energie) abandons.
Sénéchal (Cofidis) abandoned earlier in the stage0 -
Odd stuff from Movistar.
Neither reeling them in or letting them go 5 minutes or so.

Backstage Pass should be a jolly one...0

Carlton Kirby is one of the worst commentators I have ever come across.
He was just shouting about Movistar taking the win when it was blatantly obvious even to me on my phone screen that it was Orica.
Can't understand why he is allowed to commentate on bike races.0 -

So, Keukelaire wins the underwhelming sprint that ends another underwhelming stage.
At least Kirby provided a good laugh, calling Movistar the winners.
Rider recognition not his strong point, along with well........................commentary."Science is a tool for cheaters". An anonymous French PE teacher.0 -

This is, clearly, wrong information. I have evidence on the contrary:
'His style combines a great depth of knowledge with a warm sense of humour and the sharpest of reactions to make an occasion of any sporting event.'

Usually worth watching ITV highlights for the interviews etc. I find. They usually don't show too much of the actual stage if it's too dull. Anyway if you record it and watch it an hour later you can just fast forward the boring stuff.0 -

Just watched the highlights... For ten glorious minutes I thought I was going for a solo victory.
So close....Top Ten finisher - PTP Tour of Britain 20160 -
Thought it was a better stage than I anticipated to be honest thanks to the complete lack of team control in the last 20km.
I have to admit, I've struggled to tell the difference between Movistar and Orica since Orica changed their kit. On one of the early stages I was amazed that the entire Movistar team had ridden away from Froome before realising there were two OBE in the group. That said I've now sussed the difference in helmet colour and can now work out which is which from a helicopter long shot.0 -

You'd think it would be a core requirement for a professional bike race commentator, though. I could see it was an Orica guy in the lead from my phone screen for christ's sakes. It's not like the camera was flicking between riders or anything.
Kirby misidentifies a rider every 4 or 5 minutes though so it's not all that surprising he did it then. I think he learns the name of one rider per team and sticks with that whenever the kit appears.0 -
