Hi.

I'm staying in the pilsbury for a few days next month.

I'm looking at a few 35 mile routes. Any must ride climbs/areas? I'll also check out strava, garmin etc

Thanks.

The closest "must do" climbs are Winnats pass from Castleton, Goyt Valley and Cat and Fiddle... for the first you need good legs and it might not fit a 35 miles loop. Long Hill from Buxton is used for hill climb time trials, but it's an easy climb.

For a flat recreational ride, the Monsal trail from Bakewell is a must do

Is the A6 a busy road? Or not to bad....

The A6 is a horrible road, both busy and narrow in places, there are plenty of other roads running North/South that are much nicer. Also, the Monsal Trail is OK but be prepared for hundreds of pedestrians, many with dogs off the lead; it can be a bl**dy nightmare. The best time to visit the trail is just before the sun goes down - this also applies to the Tissington/High Peak trails.

  • Avoid the A6 and A515 as far as possible - there are plenty of alternatives. Concentrate on the Manifold and Goyt Valleys and you won't go far wrong.
The Manifold valley is lovely - this takes you along it and then up and over to Parwich before heading up to join the top of Via Gelia and back to Hartington and Pilsbury:

Hillier option taking in the Crowdicote hairpins and the Goyt Valley before descending past Buxton raceway:

  • And this loop gives you a great descent down Long rake toward Bakewell before climbing up Sheldon, descending into Crowdicote and then climbing up towards the Roaches before another belting descent across the moors back towards Hartington:

Hartington cafe (contains the Post Office too) is pretty good, as it the cafe on the corner in the square in Longnor.

Either of these two are a must - I often visit the Goyt Valley and it's utterly lovely. It's also closed to vehicular traffic on Sundays (but keep an eye out for bikes coming down the hill, they're allowed to do this year round). Top marks to stifflersmom for these suggestions
