Is that Carthy near the front?

It was Goncalves, who ended up 18th.

Quintana lost a few seconds to Froome and Chaves then. Contador lost a few more.

I think Fernandez thought he'd won???

    I think he did too.

From Valverde's interview it looks like he knew he was going into red.

    Fair play to him.

Kruiswijk lost just over two mins.

I put a pound e/w on lopez as soon as PP opened their book. He was doomed the second I did that - I once had a queue of punters waiting to place bets with my coworker while I sat there reading the racing post as they would rather not get on than have me jinx their bet.

Good win by Geniez. 5 Movistar riders dropping the whole race except Chaves was looking dubious but they did their usual going to early trick. Contador should retire at the end of the season as originally planned.

It's not although he has never been good at sprinting up short steep hills.

He used to be able to hang in until the sprint started though.

Pretty sure Kelly just called FDJ "Frances de Jus"

Depending how he said it that sounds pretty close.

30% is crazy, you have trouble keeping the front wheel on the ground at that kind of gradient. It did look steep on the TV.

I know how to pronounce jeune - and it doesn't sound like that! Almost sounded like he said jews.

Just watching the report on the Vuelta on Nieuwsuur here and there was some dreadful footage of Kruijswijk in the Giro showing a massive row of teeth and him on the sofa says... "perhaps he can give some to Lopez." I didn't even know he had been watching the proceedings today.

Great finish, that last incline was insane! A couple of nutters leading the last charge then Froome rolls into view.... 'Hello....' what a guy.

Berti's cooked and Quintana who should be dancing up these hills bearing in mind he did nothing during the TdF left cursing Froome's fast disappearing back wheel.

Fun stage but will it remain so?

Bertie was alright on the super steep wall in the Tirreno the other year. Maybe he's just not on form

Good discussion about Bert in the Cycling Podcast dropped last night. View that his racer instinct is a double-edged sword: it's why loads of fans love him racing, but at a time in his career now where he needs to use his head a bit more because he can't go with every move without risking paying a big price. Also pointed out he did pretty well the last time they did this climb.

These cycling podcasts for the Vuelta have been good - shorter and to the point. Not long enough to cover my commute though...
