I've never bought a new chain so I'm not sure what to look for.

Is a £5 one that much worse than a £50 one? Is it just a matter of the weight or is smooth shifting, reliability etc other things to consider?

    Generally weight, but also design.

Get a KMC, whatever you can afford.

Corrosion resistance as well, a £5 chain might rust at the first sign of rain.

Yeh just get a suitable Kmc 'x' chain in the right speed/size, x9, x10 etc.

    About £10 - £15

Also worth looking up how to fit one as you'll probably have to remove a few links for your particular bike, they generally come a bit long, so they can be shortened to fit most set ups, or count how many links your current chain has, and shorten accordingly.
