What's it all about?
Apparently the latest craze. I foresee A & E's being very busy with accident victims due to staring at their phones and not watching where the hell they're going.

I don't get it? :(

Anybody downloaded it? What's it all about?

No idea. You'd probably be better off asking users on moronradar.com than the debonair sophisticates who gather together in Cake Stop.

As far as I can tell it's like the game boy pokemon games except it uses your phones cameras, GPS etc to overlay the pokemon on the real world.

I loved the game boy games so I'm going to give it a go.

well certainly I think some of them will end up in A&E,as I had to avoid at least 4 sets of tweens staring intently at their phones and suddenly running in random directions chasing the bloomin things completely oblivious to anything else on the cycle home today.

A far greater problem as I see it is that there will be people driving along looking for the stupid things, and taking random turns, stops etc.

I'd have thought that by the time you get a car, (actually, even by the time you'd managed to grow pubic hair), you'd have grown out of pokemon, but apparently I'm wrong.

It's for people who need pretend friends as they don't have real ones.

How long before someone invents a game in which you play an office worker and it overlays a virtual bland world on top of the real bland world? And then you end up getting run over because there wasn't a bus coming in the virtual world.......

it's using augmented reality to 'hunt' pokemon on mobile devices

nice idea in low risk/threat environments, as it actually encourages physical activity

but it'll impair situational awareness, not good in the street, there're hooks in it to allow sponsors to plant pokemon in their stores (mcdonalds has been found in the code), perhaps more troubling is that anyone can create virtual lures that can be exploited to draw players into dangerous situations

mostly it'll be harmless fun, but a few will come a cropper

Already noted here a significant number of "Provisional" license drivers - that's generally teenagers in their first year of having a license - have been pinged by police for driving around looking at their phone for this game.

For them, it's an immediate loss of license altogether, plus a fine of several hundred dollars.

"Stupid" doesn't even come close to describing them.

The phone camera captures a reality image. The image is processed digitally and custom graphics added (pikachu). Then it's displayed on the phones LCD.

This image shows the addition of a "Pikachu" to a motorbike race.

What we perceive as reality could also be part of the code!?

What does "using augmented reality to hunt Pokemon on mobile devices" mean?

    ar in this context...

the device (phone/tablet) shows real time view of 'reality' on the screen

the software uses location/position sensors in the phone to figure out where the user is and which way they're pointing the camera

then it overlays a 3d modelled pokemon on the live view, as the view position changes, the overlaid image is adjusted to create the illusion that there's a 'real' pokemon there

not sure it's supported in this game, but the next step up would be to do it with vr headset to add the illusion of depth to it, then we'd be able to enjoy people wandering around in headsets oblivious to the outside world and club them to death...

This is for man-children imo but then again I'm not of a tech generation. I can be sure tho' that if meeting an attractive lady she really does not want to know you have been running about 'trainspotting' some computer character. I'd prefer 'poking' to Pokemon. But I've watched f-wits running about and driving looking for this sh1t and filling the database up with user info
