Convert old 7spd freewheel to freehub

I currently have a trusty Kona Dew City commuter which I purchased in 2012. The freewheel hub/axle has broken and the ball bearings keep flying out every time I swap over the QR skewer (for indoor trainer). It is also not very true and the spoke nipples have rusted. I would like to change the wheel to a newer freehub type and have attempted to look up and research how this can be accomplished but I need some final assistance.

Current spec:

Shifters: Shimano EZ Fire Integrated
Chainset: Shimano M131
Chainrings: 48/38/28
Front derailleur: Shimano Tourney
Rear derailleur: Shimano Altus SGS
Cassette: Shimano Tourney 7spd 14-28
Wheels: Shining MT-20 Freewheel 700c (622x17)

The OLN distance is 135MM.

Option 1: If I purchase a 9/10spd compatible wheel, a 9/10 spd cassette, along with a new derailleur and shifter, will this be enough to get up and running, and will it work correctly with the existing front mech?

Option 2: If I purchase a 7spd wheel & cassette, can I continue to use all current drive train components?

  • You can do this in installments if you wish, if you get a 9/10 speed whell you can fit a 7spd cassete with a spacer and use your current drivetrain for the moment, with option of upgrading in the future if you want
