Teeth on chainring look worn?

I noticed recently that every few teeth on my chainring looked worn, with the very top section of some of the teeth looking like it was missing.

I did however notice in a bike magazine this evening that one of the new feature bikes also seems to have some of the teeth slightly shorter, like on my bike.

I can only assume that the magazine would not feature a £5.5k Bianchi with knackered chainring....and therefore that this is an intentional design, to aid the chain moving off the chainring onto the smaller ring when you shift?

I'm curious and I'm sure someone here will have the answer :D
