Hi all in need off a bit of advice I'm new to road bikes always had mountain bikes but I'm allowed to use the c2w scheme this year so thinking about getting a road bike I've currently got a voodoo hoodoo that I use on roads I think I've took it off road once since I've brought it so bit pointless
My only worry is I'm a big lad at 19 stone I've looked at a few bikes but these are the ones I've numbered it down to but still willing to look at others.

Giant defy 4

Specialized Allez e5
https://www.cyclesolutions.co.uk/p83852 ... -road-bike
Cannondale caad8 Claris 8
https://www.cyclesolutions.co.uk/p83269 ... -road-bike

So as you can see my budget is round the £600 mark so I've got money left for accessories and clothing etc
So what would you recommend for a fat man also what clothing do you recommend

P.s most my riding is done on the roads of Torbay I have a 30 mile commute at the moment but I'm in middle of being transferred to depot closer to home which will mean 10 mile round trip

    They're all decent bikes.

You can find some reviews on them on the main site here, but you won't be buying a pup if you buy those.

In terms of attire, what you feel most comfortable with. Both physically and mentally ;).

But generally speaking there's a reason why riders wear lycra and particularly bike shorts. It is a lot more comfortable.

Some decent bike shorts and a cycling specific jersey will do you for summer riding.

Naturally in the autumn and winter you might want something warmer, but one step at a time.

If they do it in your size this could be a good choice. I have never seen or ridden one.

It has decent cable disc brakes, 18 speed and 32 spoke wheels. The tyres are 25mm and if it fitted 28mm or 30mm tyres you would get a smoother ride plus better support for your weight. I weight 16 stone and find rim brakes very poor.

Not sure if it is in your scheme

I'm a mere 17.5 stone and have only ridden on the road, there are lots of good bikes that can handle this kind of weight. I've had 2 aluminium bikes from ROSE https://www.rosebikes.com/products/bikes/ which are very competitively priced as they cut out the shop and sell direct. Their service is superb and the bikes are great, 100% recommended.

    Go for it.

Hi all thanks for your replies unfortunately it has to be thru cycle solutions/ wheelies as that's all stagecoach deal with but after having a look round on their websites I was probably thinking I need more accessories then I really do so up my budget for bike to £800 the two that have caught my eye is the giant defy 3 and felt z95 that comes with disc brakes for an extra £100 are these any good or should I be looking else where

If you want discs, the giant def 2 disc comes with good quality cable discs. In my experience at 16 stone rim brakes are ok in the dry but poor in the wet or on slick or looser surfaces. You may not find this a problem and so can save money.

Similar thread here that I have replied on.

To be honest most bikes will be fine at 18-19stone ...and your on the right track with the suggesitons above.... but if you are commuting will you not want mudguards and a rack?

I wouldnt rule out a tourer - great for heavier riders imo

Discs are great when you have more weight on the bike.... but Its not easy to get any more than 32 spoke wheels as standard

Best commuter/tourer out there, steel with 36 spoke wheels ideal for everything, and all for 900 smackers: Trek 520

Im not the slimmest of people either but it is coming off. I would recomend the giant defy. I have the 2 and the riding position is perfect for the bigger person more upright and relaxed. Hope you get what your looking for. In a couple of months you be posting not so fat man. Good luck

As a general rule, most aluminium bikes will be fine with that weight. In my experience the problem is with the cheap hubs they use. (of course, being heavier will make the problem worse). It might be worth budgeting to have your original wheel re-hubbed and spoked when the time comes or budget for a handbuilt set designed to take a heavier rider.

I can recommend DT Swiss 1850 and Mavic Ksyrium Elite's as being more than capable for 18 stone.

Have you looked at the Clydesdale website for ideas?
