I've been cycling for 5 years now without a single problem arising. But the other week i was hit by a car that was doing a U-turn. I wasn't injured really (only a few cuts) but my bike is wrecked. Is there any way of claiming the money for my bike back?

    Household insurance.

    Other person's car insurance.

If they aren't insured and they have been prosecuted, criminal injuries compensation scheme or whatever the uninsured drivers' one is called.

I'm afraid i am not covered with BC, so what options does it leave me regarding what company to go to etc.. I wouldn't mind a replacement bike if anyone offers this service.

Essentially you need to find a no-win-no-fee lawyer.

Leigh day are spoken highly of although I am sure others will also recommend someone.

You need to ensure that you have full records of the person who hit you and that the police were involved to make sure there are statements etc.

Make sure you see a doctor as you may have injuries which have not yet made themselves known.

I have the car at faults Reg, name and address. The police were not called due to it only being my bike that sustained most of the damage.

You can either claim on your own insurance (if you are covered) but that will impact your future premiums - or - the better option is to claim on the driver's insurance (their premium will increase!). If you don't have their insurance and other details you can find out who they are insured with via their registration number. Costs about £3 as I recall to get that but you can add that to your claim. I had to do this about four years ago and it was pretty straightforward and I was paid full new for old value on everything that was damaged. The insurers were just happy that I wasn't claiming personal injuries I think which is why they paid out new for old as they don't have to!

Just seen your latest post - report it to the police immediately you and driver must report any accident which involves a person. Police will allocate an incident number which will help your claim. AFAIK no one will take the case for free if there is no personal injury as the value is too low for them to recover their costs. Beware what appears to be no win no fee read the very small print.

You should probably inform the police anyway if you want to make a claim - someone will likely ask for an incident / log number. You can do it by email.

"I wasn't injured really (only a few cuts)"

    i.e. you were injured

i am NOT saying sue for damages for injuries as it seems they fortunately were minor, but the fact is you were injured

take photos of these cuts, damaged clothing, check helmet for any cracks etc.

make factual notes of exactly what happened before you forget, every detail you can remember, do not speculate on the driver's motivation or awareness, simply say what they did, not what you think they saw/knew

    make a police report

contact a law firm that specialises in the field

Try CTC (or Cycling UK as they are now). It used to be the case that you can get retrospective cover if the lawyers agree to take the case but you have to then buy a five year membership. Although if the lawyers do everything right you can claim for that cost as well.
