Interesting stuff, especially the "new" section at Hem.

New Hem section only in 'future' editions... so not this year. An additional section in the run in could shake things up...

Has the uphill section Hameau du Buat (included after three year absence) had much impact in the past? It's still a long way from the finish...

"work is being carried out to lay cobblestones on a 3km pedestrian and cycle path".

Perhaps I'm misreading that sentence, but not sure I'd be too happy if I was a resident of that town.

Yes, that's what I was thinking. The section at Hem that's used at the moment isn't really that difficult. The only time I can remember it having any effect on the race was when Museeuw punctured there in 2004.

It's a long way from the finish and not really that difficult. Don't think it will make too much difference. Oh and here's my video from that section in 2009...

    257.5km? Now that's a proper distance.

Better than the potholes and glass they use to surface the ones round here...

Apparently they are recommending riders not to shave to close down below and

also to use hairy tonic to get greater lenght. It improves shock proofing and the

more neanderthal among us have a welcome, though not universally popular, advantage.

It is being referred to as the "Roubix Pube" !!

Instead of introducing new sectors they should get rid of the dirt tracks down the side of the 5 star sectors.

Or hose them down like they do in horse racing.

Haven't they been putting barriers down a lot of those sections recently to keep the riders on the cobbles.

Not sure but last year they were using the 'easier' route pretty liberally.

Riding some of the gutters can be pretty risky - potholes, stray cobbles, spectators, once you're on that line and travelling at speed it isn't easy to get back on the cobbles either. In the dry, powering along the crown of the cobbled road is probably best, but in the wet I would maybe risk the gutters!

The organisers of Paris-Roubaix took a tour of the cobbled sectors of Sunday's course on Monday, and discovered to their surprise that the first section in Troisville was covered in mud and could be too dangerous to use.

Err, guys, it's Paris Roubaix, not the track.

    It's also not Total Wipeout.

  • Gouvenu saying it's the change between wet and dry sections, as opposed to the fact there is mud as the headline may suggest.

Although I clicked on the link to find that detail, so Cyclingnews get what they want...

Wonder if we'll get a wet Roubaix, seems like forever since we had heavy rain during the race.
[Castle Donington Ladies FC - going up in '22]
  • Current forecast 14 degrees, mostly cloudy with a 20% chance of precipitation

Historical weather patterns show that area to tend to dry Aprils but much wetter Julys (hello 2014 Tour)

Guys, wet Roubaix is a myth told by old timers to let the kids know it was better back in the day. There's no such thing. It's cycling's unicorn.

yet, having done the course twice: the first time under torrential rain and the second just after an overnight rainfall... never seen the first half dry... me, but always greeted by sunshine in the velodrome

I will head down to Nyhavn in Copenhagen and verbally bully swans and doves until they look at me with a fed up rainbow face like a melted Skittle if I see one rider using the gutter instead of the cobbles.
