Would it be compatible/work or am i better getting a 4700 or another 5700 lever same as the current one on my bike which has stoped working.

New 5800 left levers cost about the same as 4700 or 5700 one.

5800 lever really needs one of the newer front mechs with the much longer arm. So tiagra 4700, 5800, 6800 etc

So you have 5700 shifters but 4600 FD and the 5700 lever has stopped working.

If your bike is 10 speed then you may as well stick with 10 speed as you'll need to change the cassette, RD and FD if you want to move to 11 speed.

5700 left lever will not work with a 4700 FD.

5800 left lever will not work with 4600 FD.

If it were me I'd buy the 4700 levers and 4700 FD which is much nicer and smoother than the 5700 FD.

But Shimano changed the pull ratios with Tiagra 4700 so new 4700 shifters apparently won't play nicely with any of the older 10 speed rear mechs (4600, 5700 etc)

Simplest option is just to replace the LH shifter with a new 5700 one. Or have a look on Ebay see if anyone's trying to sell one / a pair.

I got a good as new LH 5603 shifter for £25 when mine went pop.

I don't see why a 4600 RD wont work with a 4700 shifter. The shifter determines the amount of cable to pull, the amount of cable pulled moves the derailleur accordingly, there is no ratchet or indexing on the RD itself, so it moves as much as the shifter allows it to move. The FD is different in that it needs a specific pull length to engage it fully but the rears are passive and move however much the shifter allows. Like I said i have 4500 RD (9spd) and 4600 shifters (10spd) The RD works perfectly and considering that there is less than 1mm difference in the width of a 10spd cassette and 11spd cassette then a 4600 RD should work perfectly with 5800/6800/9000 shifter also with minor limit adjustment.

Because the cable pull is different. The shape of the parallelogram and the cable bolt position also have to be changed slightly. This determines the shift ratio (how far the RD moves for each pull of cable) so it corresponds to the correct shift pitch (cog spacing). Its the geometry and is the same reason why you can cannot mix and match shifters and RD's from Sram or Campagnolo because they also use different cable pull ratio's.

You can use older 4500 on 10spd because the cable pull is similar. However a 4600,4700 RD will not work properly with 5800,6800,9000 shifters because the shift pitch (cog spacing) is closer together. Requiring a different geometry.

Someone else will chip in if there is likely to be a technical issue with the crankset but my suggestion would be, If in doubt, just stump up for a new 105 front mech as well. They only cost £20 or so and you will probably notice an improvement in front shifting.

Given that the 5800/4700 front shift is much improved over 5700/4600 I would agree that best option is to upgrade the mech as well as replace the shifter. However this would result in un-matched shifters and the need to replace the mech as well as the shifter.
