edited February 2016 in Commuting chat
Just been told by Wheelies Direct that I have this to spend as I had 2 MTBs stolen - one HT and one FS

My current herd is Sunday Best FS MTB, Sunday Best Road Bike and a singlespeed commuter

1. All on one HT
2. All on one decent road bike
3. One HT plus a new commuter bike

Normally, I have a requirement ("mmmm, I need a new road bike") and then I save money and fulfil the requirement. But this is 4rse about face

Option 1
Road Bikes
Giant Propel Advance looks great but I have a Cervelo S3 already so that seems a waste irrespective of how nice it looks
Colnago ACR Ultegra looks good

Option 2
MTB Bikes

Orbea Alma 27 M20
Cube Elite C62

Or just get bog standard Option 3

Help a brother out

Road bike geometry, 30mm travel at the front, 650c wheels with big tyres that end up same diameter as 700c with normal tyres.

So, that could do the trails, could commute on it if need be. Wouldn't step on the toes of the full sus MTB or Cervelo.
And you can tell us all about it :D

  • What about a gravel/adventure bike (forget the silly name - a robust, disc braked, big tyre clearance go almost anywhere bike)?

  • I'd say a decent adventure road bike too. Could be used for a light tour if needed, or off-road but not MTB rides. Winter trainer, commuter. I like titanium and it hits your price bracket...

Does it all have to be spent at Wheelies?
I'd blow about half on a 29er hardtail and the rest on a gravel, cross, adventure, bad weather road bike with discs.

I think it does have to be spent at Wheelies but if it didn't then a YT Capra Carbon Fibre Pro Race

I'd add a few quid then look at a Naim amp and a pair of PMC20-23 speakers personally.

Can you buy those from Wheelies?

Though on that note - any mileage in telling them they don't sell the bike you want and can you have the cash instead.

I tried that when I had my insurance payout after the Kona got nicked. I got a payment that was 10 or 20% less, can't remember which. But as proven by the bargain threads it's not difficult to get a bike with more discount that that. Probably depends on the insurance company.

I spoke to Wheelies this morning and said that I couldn't make up my mind so I'd prefer the cash and they referred me back to Insurance company. They were keen to get me to spend the £2,666 with them obviously - they mentioned that they could look at other brands that weren't advertised on their website like Lynskey. That's great obviously but I'd need another £2k to build the frame up!

    Get the Slate!

Or go to insurance company saying that Wheelies have advised that you should take the cash instead as they're unable to provide the bike you're interested in :D

    Also, get the Slate!

I had a moment of weakness and was honest with my wife so after some sensible, but one-sided, discussions we've decided to think long and hard about taking the money. I did show her the Slate and even she laughed. Some creative thinking is now required in order to end up with a brand new, but ultimately, pointless new bike (probably cyclocross)

That bit really needs a facepalm emoticon.
Take the money and cycle to work it is then. Buy something for the wife to buy her silence with some of the money, top up the cycle to work with the rest.
