10 speed ratios - help needed

I have just received my, new to me Specialized Tarmac, it is 10 Speed SRAM Red.

The chainrings are 53/39, the outer ring which I really don't like is a SRAM Aero/TT one, the inner just a Specialized item. It is 130bcd and the cassette I understand is 11-28.

I have spent a while looking for 50/34 chainrings but they don't seem to exist outside of getting them made by somebody like FibreLyte, and that is more than I want to spend and not sure about the longevity of carbon rings.

If I have to stay with the 53/39 I really want to change the Aero/TT ring as I have a strong dislike for it (purely looks based).

On my other bike I have DA9000 50/34 with 11-28 cassette. Is it possible to get similar ratios to the DA9000 set-up with the 10 speed? (allowing for the fact it would be impossible without switching to 11 speed to get exactly the same)

The driving force is I prefer the compact drivetrain these days, not trying to break any records or any desire to race.

Any help really appreciated.

Thanks

Given that you already have a large cassette, the simplest thing to do is fit a compact chainset. Expensive if you want to stick with Red; cheaper if you'd be happy with a cheaper SRAM chainset...

No doubt you'd be able to sell the existing one on Ebay or on here to defray the cost?

You can't get smaller rings to fit yours as with130bcd that would put the bolt holes about where the teeth are. You'll need to change the whole chainset - there are always loads on eBay and you'll get something back for yours.

Lower the FD, shorten the chain and that's all you need.
I'm left handed, if that matters.

The only one I have seen is this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod18483

Also contacted Fibre-Lyte about their carbon rings.

50t rings are available in 130bcd, but going smaller than a 39 inner on 130bcd is problematic...

You could go 52/38 for the chainrings.

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ta-130-pcd-aliz ... gs-38-46t/

You might be able to run a 12-30 cassette on the rear, depending on geometry and hanger length. http://www.wiggle.co.uk/shimano-ultegra ... -cassette/.

Worth a try since they're only 30-odd quid. Shimano and SRAM cassettes are interchangeable.

38/30 is a little higher than 34/28, but not too bad. By the same token, 52/12 is slightly lower than 50/11, but if you can spin out a 52/12 you shouldn't be worrying about lowering your ratios...

964Cup - good find, will have to find if the hanger will go to a 30. Spinning out...ha ha, I wish!

    £28 here for the 12-30 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod39014

if it's the standard red rear mech, 28t is the maximum specified

52/38 vs. 53/39 will be barely noticeable in terms of effort, if you need a compact, best to just get one and put the other on ebay

you need to find out what bb the bike has to get the right one (otherwise you'll need to change bb too)

Planet X have compact FSA Gossamers at £50 at the mo - not as good as a Red chain set but cheap as chips and you'll be able to cover the cost plus more by selling the Red chain set.

Yes, but most mechs will go larger. For instance, DA is also rated to 28 but on most bikes will run a 30 quite happily. 32 is usually a stretch too far without a GS mech (WiFli in SRAM terms).

Another vote for buying a compact (110bcd) chainset with 50/34 rings. Sell the Red one you have on ebay. Job done

Red chainsets are light, and expensive. Unless you buy another SRAM chainset, you'll have to change the BB as well. A cheap FSA chainset & cheap mega-exo BB will add about 300-350g to the bike. If you don't care about weight, fine, but then why bother with Red in the first place?

After speaking to Specialized and sending them pictures of my current set-up they confirmed I can swap Spiders.

Have secured an S-Works 110bcd Spider which will allow me to swap to the compact chainrings. Will then be able to sell the SRAM Aero ring and a few other parts.....might try on here first as eBay fees are mad these days (unless you get an offer from them).

Thanks to all who replied :-)
