Hi all

I have just got back into mountain biking and has been about 12 years since i have done anything properly. i rushed into buying a second hand bike from ebay a few month ago and instantly regretted my choice paid too much and the bike although it works is hard work and heavy.

i have been looking at getting a new frame as most of the component on the disaster buy are ok and i blew my budget on it.

i have found a cube stereo 2010 frame (with rear shock and headset) which is in very good condition and is £440 i was just wondering if anyone had an opinion on whether this was an ok price

any help would be appreciated. oh and the 440 is my max budget actually over it but i am willing to push it to that level

I wouldn't, but before you decide, would all your bits fit and work - fork length, steerer size, axle sizes, BB size etc.

thanks for the reply out of curiosity why wouldn't you?

yeah spent a while going over everything i have and 99% of it would work on the frame only thing would be an axle conversion on the rear but only cost 15 quid.

The Cube full sussers seem more designed for Contiental 'trecking' type use than UK use, they tend to lack small bump sensitivity and then blow through their travel (worst of both worlds you could say) - also which stereo as they go from 120-160mm travel depending on the version!

For that budget there is a big choice on fleabay of decent full suss frames, mine was just £106 delivered (though it's different to yours - link in my sig to the Niota).

What bike are you robbing of components (make, model and year)? What sort of riding will you be doing with it? What travel are your forks?
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • is it not the shock that determines how quickly the travel is used? or is the the set-up of the swings arm?

its a stereo rx 2010. and its is a 140mm travel.

robbing from a 2006 mongoose teocali comp however most of it has been upgraded and changed from the original spec.

i will mainly be doing single track and trail but i do prefer the DH elements with alot of good areas close by. forks are 140mm travel

The frame is different as well, so you can't use a 160 as a 100mm. The geometry sets the progression, you can fine tune it to an extent but if a frame doesn't have enough, it will never have enough. Swapping shocks around is an expensive business as well!

The forks would match that frame then, but there are other frames I'd go for first. You should be able to get a Trance frame for example, much better.

its way overpriced as well for a 2010 model which is probably actually from 2009

The Merida won't take 140mm forks and you'll need a new back wheel.

The Foxy is very well received, but you will need a new super short stem to take advantage of the geo.

The Spesh is also a nice bike as long as the Brain shock is working properly.

Re the Specialised - if the shock isn't working properly it's a PITA with the funny mount.

All different sizes as well, you need to work out what will fit.

I understood the yoke would fit any Fox shock and also could be made to fit RS?

Re sizes, I understood the Foxy came up a bit long, so a medium Foxy and large Spesh are probably similar 'actual' sizes?

  • thanks, i think i may just slow things down and spend a bit more time on finding the right frame after all i do have a working bike just a little harder work and that never hurt anyone, if my memory serves me right things were a lot less complicated 12 years ago. any suggestion on decent website for looking at?

Would it not work out cheaper/better to sell or part out the bike you don't like and buy a Trance or similar? Some great deals around on old stock at the moment.

No, you can rebuild a later model Fox shock using the piston from the Specialized's shock. Rockshox shocks don't like the weird loadings that FSR frames put through them.
I'd look for something like a Transition Covert, Nukeproof Mega TR, Giant Trance or Stumpjumper

Thanks for the correction. I know not every shock likes the significantly increased bending moment created by the longer effective eye to eye due to the Yoke length (CCDB for example).
