I can't decide if I like him, the description of him at the start of this article sounds horrible, but my god does he know how to win bike races and he's only 23.
"The 23-year-old is back home in Canberra, sitting at a Woden cafe, wearing designer sunglasses, studs in each ear, a piercing through his eyebrow and an $8000 white-gold diamond bracelet.
A long necklace with a pair of cobalt-black crucifixes hangs to the middle of his chest, which incongruously happens to lie in the cleavage of the open-shirted bombshell featured on the front of his own fashion T-shirt.

Cooke saying he thinks he can go on and win everything (classics, TDF green jersey, worlds), I think he'll have a huge career. I'm going to add him to team my man I think.
Seems he missed the nationals, I'm assuming as he got married the week before.

He's a young Aussie larakin with too much money and people telling him he's awesome. He's far from unique among young sportsmen. Careful with your criticism though, many of us would nt have been much different...We're in danger of confusing passion with incompetence

In the 2007 Tour of Bright (The biggest non NRS stage race in Aus) there was this young 15yo kid from B grade pacing the main A grade bunch on Mt Hotham (a 20km climb, the stage was won by Richie Porte) even though B grade started some 5 minutes later.He's a young Aussie larakin with too much money and people telling him he's awesome. A few of us got talking to this kid after he came in and it turned out he'd been racing for less than 6 months and was worried he was in too high a grade!
His name? You guessed it, Michael Matthews. If you want further proof of his talent, look at the results from the 2010 Tour de L'Avenir and remember - he came in as a sprinter, and didn't start riding for GC until Tom Palmer crashed. It's no accident that Matthews' star is still rising.0 -

Is he a Gerrans 2.0 or Gilbert 2.0? That may be key to his popularity (his love of bling makes no odds to me). It seems like he doesn't stick his nose in the wind much but perhaps I'm being unfair as I don't recall his victories too well.0 -
i think it's because he's always referred to as bling. he might as well be known as to55er matthews, its basically the same thing. it's not helped by been called "bling" when you can only win races where the top guys shows up. it's like people raving about bouhani cos he won some giro stages, but only after kittel pulled out. that made me dislike bouhani, similar also for nibali."Unfortunately these days a lot of people don’t understand the real quality of a bike" Ernesto Colnago0

I like him - he is a bit brash but in a world of sanitised sound bite media trained sports people good to see someone who wears their heart on their sleeve. The bling name is a bit much but hey he certainly has some talent and if he wants to spend his winnings on diamond studs and peacock around a bit who are we to judge.0

With you there - I'm full-on straight but he is a fine figure of a man. He also comes across as a bloody nice bloke, which is why he's on Paul 8v's list of exceptions. He could also add Richie Porte to that list too.
But I can't get behind anyone who willingly adopts the nickname 'Bling', irrespective of where he's from.It's only a bit of sport, Mun. Relax and enjoy the racing.0 -

How many sprinters do? Look back at his stage win at the 2014 Giro. How many guys could have matched, let alone beat Matthews there? Sagan, Gilbert, Valverde maybe Gerrans, KwiatkowskiShocker: Brit sport fans don't much like Aussie sportsmen...

Despite the nickname of Bling, on the bike i see precious little of that apart from his earring - the OGE helmet and sunglasses look like shit then there is the cheesy smile and boyband haircut. To merit being called Bling rather than Matthew i want to see a bit more ostentatous style and swagger. Not expecting him to go the full Cipo but i do expect a little more effort to be put in.0
