General biking (off-road simply riding)

Evening all,

Am a 26 yo (from Bonnie scotland(with 2 little girls and it's time for me to get so me time back through biking. Am not looking to bike up massive hills (for just now) just long forest trails etc. I have lots of reading to catch up with what's what and all the technical terms. Have started reading stuff but finding it a bit of a mine field at times. (Confused)

So about 3 years ago I bought a second hand 2005 specialized p1 for £50. I used it to go to the shop and taking the dog for a run. But now am wanting to do more as I said above easy trails through the woods. I also have a 2004 specialized p2 but that's in bits. Funds are low just now.

The question for you experts is-

What are my limitations with the p1???

Do I put gears from the p2 on it?

Or am I being stupid do I just need to save and buy a new bike??

    I use a 1996 Kona Explosif for playing around in the woods. It does fine. I have a dozen others, most a lot more modern for rougher stuff, but it manages almost anything, just a bit slower than the new stuff when it gets really rough.

    But without knowing what bits you have it's hard to say.

    The p1 is standard with the following spec-

    Marzocchi EXR Comp, 100mm

    Truvativ crankset 32 tooth

    Ss 16 tooth rear cog

    26" sun rims ditch witch


    I can find it more spec of need be

    I find the bike good but it lacks some gears, what measurements would I have to obtain to buy the correct hub, cassette and rear mech??
