Coast to Coast - Whitehaven to Tynemouth

Hi All,

A group of us are doing this route over three days, Friday to Sunday this week. We're staying in Langwathby Friday night, and Stanhope Saturday night.

We are using a mixture of road bikes, cyclocross and hybrid, so we're looking at taking the official route but using sections that will be suitable for the road bikes.

I have a garmin edge and i'm sure that somewhere, someone will have done the same route and the GPX will be available but i'm struggling to find it. Does anyone have a link to a route by any chance? We have bought a paper map but it would be useful to be able to use the garmin.

Any other general advice would be appreciated too, none of us have cycled the route before.

Is that no good? You should be fine, as long as you stick to the main road up through Whinlatter, rather than taking the signposted route, as its a bit more dodgy for road bikes. Keswick to Stanhope is all good roads, then I have done about half of it from Stanhope towards Tynemouth and it was all fine (even if you go down the Waskerley Way after the Parkhead Station at the top of Crawleyside).

Where you staying in Stanhope?

Have you looked at planing your own route using http://ridewithgps.com/
You can then export your route as a gpxTrack file and load it onto your Garmin.

Hello,

I've just done it - did it last weekend.

Ended up leaving Whitehaven on the Saturday at 2pm and finished in Tynemouth on the Sunday at 6pm.

We were all on road bikes so the organiser (a mate) went on to Strava and copied a route from a chap who did it all in one day because he expressly said it was all on roads. Have a look and a search on Strava is my suggestion.

There were a few 'A' roads but by and large, it was all minor roads.

If you want my Strava route let me know and I'll PM it over. It was a cracking ride, I would have preferred to have done it over 3 days though - 2 days was a bit of a killer (god knows who people do it in 1 day!).

We deviated in a few places - I don't recall where exactly, I don't save rides in Strava - so I'd advise you go through it with a fine-tooth comb to make sure it's suitable for your needs.

Hi - any chance of a link to your strava route for your C2C cycle please?

Must admit (not wanting to put a dampener on it) the thought of riding through busy places such as consett, wallsend and newcastle to finish a ride would fill me with dread, when there are so many much nicer routes C2C further south ie W2W or even C2C st Bees to saltburn. Not sure why the Whitehaven to Newcastle became the default route given the urban finish. Good luck tho' the first C2C is always the most memorable

I have read that the fantastic café at the top of Hartside has burned down. was a handy stop off point.
