Multiple broken spokes

I'm after a bit of advice please, I had a spoke pop on me on my way to work this morning, which would make it the 4th one on my back wheel. My bike is a Trek X-Caliber 9 2014 with Bontrager AT-850 29er wheels. Should I take it to my lbs to get the whole wheel relaced or bin the wheel(s) off and get a new one? Any recommendations for a cheap 29er wheel thats similar to the one I have or better for minimal outlay?

Thanks

  • A whole new one might be more cost effective, but I'd just replace to spokes as you go on the one you've got.
  • I have been replacing them and getting it tru'd but i read somewhere that if 4-5 spokes go then to either get it relaced completely or get a new wheel? Cant remember where I read that though! haha!
  • If you can sort it all yourself then it's not much of an issue, but if you're paying each time then yes it may be worth getting a new wheel.

Or just have it fixed properly. Not much info but if you've been replacing the spokes yourself, you seem to be doing something wrong.

Is it the actual spoke that is snapping or just the nipple?

Alloy nipples are prone to breaking and if that is the issue you could rebuild the wheel with brass nipples

I now await the typical "ooooerr comments" :D
  • It's the actual spokes that are snapping, snapping at the nipple end.

I have replaced one myself and then took it to the shop to be tru'd as my experience level dictates avoidance of fiddling at the minute. I'll take it in and see how much they would charge to redo the complete wheel and take it from there I think.

What wheels would you recommend, mainly used for commuting on road and xc at weekends?

    Thanks

    Is it in warranty?

Either way there is an argument that SoGA applies and the sold product was not fit for purpose as spokes should simply not be snapping after 1-2 years.

Are they snapping just where they enter the nipple, that is usually caused by corrosion.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Sounds like the wheel needs properly re-tensioning and stress relieving. If spokes are too loose or not evenly tightened then they be likely to snap. Take the wheel to a good mountain bike shop. In my experience road biased shops are crap with mountain bike wheels.
