Is this a bad idea? Looking for a new set of tyres for the Stumpy but the 317's are a narrow rim. Should I stick to 2.2?

A 2.4 is a bit too big for a 17mm, it will be too unstable I think.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

So would a 2.3 be max or would you stick to a 2.2?

Lot of bikes came with 2.25 Ardents fitted as standard to Mavic X317 (Orange amongst others) 3 or 4 years ago.
IMO that would be the limit. Wider would probably feel wobbly when ragging it.

Yeah, I've had a look into it and most people recommend staying at a 2.2" max. I've got 2.1's on the front and back at the minute but fancied something a little chunkier without compromising on ride quality.

2.2" or a narrower 2.25" would be OK, I ran a 2.25" Schwalbe on my old 17mm rims and it was OK.
