How do I find out what model of frame I have?

Hello all, I'm Joe.
I am at the start of a project to build my first dirt jump bike
and was lucky enough to be given a jump bike frame for free.
However as it came semi pre-sanded, with all the decals
removed, I have no way to look up the original spec. The
previous owner told me that it is a GT Chucker frame, but
he didn't know which model, or even which year it is!

Does anyone know if it is possible to identify a frame's model
and year by the number stamped on the underside of the
bottom bracket shell?
I have tried speaking to GT directly about this, unfortunately
they weren't able to help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Joe

The Checker frame was identical for all models. Only the components bolted to the frame changed. I doubt that you will be able to identify what the original component spec was, just build it up with the best bits you can afford.
  • Ah, well that's nice and easy then!
Thank you for you help RockmonkeySC,
    it is greatly appreciated.

Really? I wouldn't say the earlier steel frames were identical to the later aluminium ones!

It doesn't matter what was OE fit anyway, as long as the part in question is suitable, bike parts are pretty much all generic and can be interchanged.

I forgot they made a steel Checker! That was a long time ago, back when GT were one of the best.

And the steel frames go for good money (I've had two).....and yes they are good frames, weight is similar to the alloy and they are very nicely put together.
