    The urban legend behind that photograph is the bike belonged to a lad who leaned his bike against a young sapling when he went off to join the first world war, "back before christmas" whatnot. However, he unfortunately never came back. The bike remained where it was over the years as the sapling grew around it.

    Don't know if there is any truth behind the tale, as I think the bike looks too modern and probably photoshopped.

    Nice legend. It falls down on a few points though.

    As you say, the bike looks to modern for WW1.
    I don't think the tree is that old either.
    It's hard to get the scale, but looks like a kids bike, did he join up at 5 years old?
    Possibly a girls bike, as there's no crossbar.

    But I don't think it's photoshopped.


    The older I get, the better I was.
