Just had a great holiday cycling here, if you get the chance, do it, there are some proper challenges Zoncolan, Mortirolo, Stelvio, Fadaia, for starters. Scenery as breath taking as the gradients.

Agreed, the Dolomites are stunning however I prefere them in a winter coat.Advocate of disc brakes.0

Agreed, the Dolomites are stunning however I prefere them in a winter coat.
It doesn't have to be either/or. I've been in Cortina d'Ampezzo in both summer and winter and the sight of the mountains glowing salmon pink as the sun goes down on a summer evening is hard to beat.
For anyone who hasn't been there one of the things that makes the Dolomites interesting for cyclists is that the area used to be islands millions of years ago, so in contrast to many other parts of the Alps where you have long valleys and your choice is often to go up to the pass and down again, in the Dolomites it's easier to put together circular loops (going round the islands).
On the negative side, the area is very popular with motorcyclists - who tend to like the same scenic roads that we do.0 -
It's a fantastic place to ride - just so many incredible climbs and the area around Corvara is particularly incredible.

I am thinking of touring through the dolomites in summer, would you recommend setting up camp as a base then spend a few days cycling, or is it possible to tour through the dolomites? I would love to spend some time camping on summits0
