Hi,
Could anybody recommend me a sleeveless base layer that is not to pricey, preferably merino. Also what are the string vest style ones like to wear?
Cheers.

Look no further (not merino though):

Size up a tad big mind, so maybe get a size smaller. Care required putting on and taking off, but great performance.

+1. Can confirm on the sizing too, I'm usually a large (6'1, 75kg) but medium fits perfectly.

With regards to what it is like to wear - I personally do not notice the 'string'/mesh design - feels perfectly smooth on the skin.

Got to agree - the Craft base layers are great for warm weather.

The latest sleeveless Aldi one I find is excellent, as is the aldi merino long sleeve one - that might have been in a skiing promotion but its great for the bike in colder times

Because you might want it to last 10 years not 10 months, and to retain something of a fit and shape? :D

+1. I've got 2 of the Ristretto sleeveless purchased 6 years ago. Great for cool to warm weather. Maybe a little too warm for very hot days but still comfortable when sweating. Reasonably durable and as mentioned run a little larger than some of the other euro sized brands.
  • Bought my first 'string vest' base layer last year and I absolutely love them. Unless it's very cold (and I'm wearing a dedicated winter base layer) I wouldn't go out without one now. Far better than normal base layers (IMHO). The two I've purchased are:

    http://www.d2dcyclingclothing.co.uk/pro ... ase-layer/

    which is sleeveless!

    and . . . .

    http://www.jejamescycles.co.uk/santini- ... oC_Jbw_wcB

    which has short sleeved arms!

    Both excellent!

+1 on these Craft mesh tops too. I've a couple of them and they're brilliant for the hot weather. I've various Craft base layers for different seasons and they're all very very good.

I have a medium size and I weigh 80kg. Snug but stretchy and v. comfortable.

I have a lightweight sleeveless Aldi one that I bought about 4 yrs ago. It's as good today as the day I bought it, which is to say excellent. It's my go-to base layer all Summer long.

When it comes to base layers, how the garment will perform is based on the garment's fabric and also its fit

There is an obvious difference between Merino and man made fibres, but did you know there is a big difference in man made fabric performance? Also, each fabric works better for a particular purpose. After all a walk in the dales would require different capabilities from a base layer, as opposed to an hour cycling tempo.

This article goes into much more detail
