Which aggressive 29er tyre in 2.25?

After a couple of years on a hardtail 29er I found great all round tyre for my riding and terrain in a schwalbe hans dampf alas I can only find it in 2.3 and it simply won't fit in the swingarm of my current bike, a pivot mach 429 :(

I'm currently running MAXXIS ardent's which are the best of all of the tyres I've currently tried ( Nobby nic, conti mountain king, maxxis beaver) however since things have dried out and it's getting loose and dusty they are washing out when I'm really pushing downhill and as a result it's knocking my confidence.

I can't seem to find and aggressive tyre in 2.2 or 2.25 in 29er flavour. I'm going to try a Maxxis minion DHF on the front but I don't think the rear will fit in the frame.

Any suggestions?

I don't think they will fit as I have the 2.2's on my 26er and they are pretty big for 2.2! I actually preferred my trusty panaracer cinders on the 26er though but not a bad tire.

Which version of the nobby nic have you tried. The new version seems to get some very positive reviews, likened to a lighter hans dampf, it's on my shortlist for the front when I need a change along with the HD.

Nobby Nic Evo, tubeless, tried it about 12 months ago, not even remotely comparable to the Hans dampf who's blocks are a chunk bigger. The HD is a far more aggressive tyre. The Maxxis ardents are a much better tyre (more aggressive) than the Nobby Nics for me and my riding but still not aggressive enough when it's steep and loose.

The WTB trail boss has turned up today however the tread blocks are no bigger than the Ardents. I'll give it a go and see how it compares to the ardents. Waiting for the Maxxis Minion to arrive for the front now.

That will be the old nobby nic then, not tried the new one myself but gets some good reviews, have a look for lawmans mandraker foxy in the your mountain bikes section, he's using one and gave some very good feedback on it.

Ignore my previous post about the WTB trail boss tread block being the same size as the ardents. When I fitted it I checked the tread depth against the ardent I had on the front which showed minimal wear and the trail boss definitely has a deeper tread.

Went out yesterday with a new minion on the front and the trail boss on the rear. I'm running tubeless and initially had both tyres at 30psi according to my track pump but they were both too hard and skittish. Dropped a bit of wind out of them and the level of grip feels now to be at least on a par with the hans dampfs I was running on the may hardtail. Confidence is restored!
Thaks for the heads up on the WTB's lostboysaint.

Re the nobby nic's, one of my concerns with them has always been that the sidewalls seemed quite thin on the versions I ran, even the EXO protection versions and they seemed to suffer on the rocky terrain around me. Will check read up on the new one but happy with the WTB rear and minion front for now.

Thanks all for input and suggestions 8)
