I just bought a Giant STP for spares & repairs for £15, it has Reba SL on it! however I cant take off the stem as the bolts are rounded off & seized what can I do to get it off?

    Drill it out

+1. Carefully... Use a drill bit the same size as the thread of the bolt, not the size of the head of the bolt - unless you have no further use for the stem.. :)

Thanks, I ended up having to use a saw to cut the bolt in half took 2 hours

  • In the future, use a drill just marginally bigger than the thread.

As soon as you drill through the head, whats left of the head will spin and come off, removing all the tension, and leaving just the threaded shank left in the body.

    they should just unwind then.

Get it in work when undoing flanges of numerous bolts. people take out 55, and the 56th has all the tension on it and people then round the heads (like idiots). pop the head and bobs your uncle.

What? So what you are saying is that the head stores tension? Different insight from mine.

Also for future reference, sometimes with a rounded allen bolt it's possible to hammer a torx bit which will grip enough to undo the bolt.

Thanks for suggestion peeps, but I already tried; drilling, heating & wedging a bigger allen key but it was rounded to literally a circle & looked like it was super super glued & welded in there lol, I had no choice but to cut it

If the bolt was that bad, hopefully the forks were looked after better.

I'm intrigued as to what your insight is. How else can a bolt work?

    Wizardry obviously.
