Van Avermaet **warning** may or may not contain drugs
The Belgian Cycling Federation requested a 2 year ban for GVA. BMC won't be suspending him. How does that work? Surely the Belgian CF have the authority or is this just a suggestion because GVA worked with Mertens and don't actually have any proof? Odd situation. He is either guilty or he isn't.

What the hell is a "request"? Who are they requesting it from?Warning No formatter is installed for the format0 -
If I understand correctly, the prosecutor has requested a two-year ban. A decision hasn't yet been made on his guilt/innocence. BMC will let him ride until a ban is actually handed down.Team My Man 2018: David gaudu, Pierre Latour, Romain Bardet, Thibaut pinot, Alexandre Geniez, Florian Senechal, Warren Barguil, Benoit Cosnefroy0

The Belgian Anti-Doping Association (or whatever it is called) - pretty sure they're the only body that can hand out a ban.0

I guess they've passed the info they got to the Belgium anti-doping (maybe the new uci one if its up and running) and said they think there's evidence of doping and he should be banned for two years. Now it's up for the anti-doping body to judge and pass down the final sentence.0

Precisely. From Reuters:(Reuters) - Greg Van Avermaet will not be suspended by his team after the Belgian federation requested a two-year doping ban against the classics specialist, BMC Racing said on Thursday.
"The BMC Racing Team is aware of today's hearing by the Belgian Cycling Federation, Koninklijke Belgische Wielrijdersbond, in which Greg Van Avermaet appeared in relation to the investigation of Dr. Chris Mertens," BMC said in a statement.
"Based on information currently available to the BMC Racing Team, Van Avermaet will not be withheld from competition."
Earlier on Thursday the Belgian news agency Belga reported that Jaak Fransen, the Belgian federation's prosecutor, requested a two-year suspension against Van Avermaet who is suspected of having doped in 2012 with the help of Mertens.
Van Avermaet has admitted that he worked with Mertens but insisted he has not done anything wrong.
He finished third in two of the biggest one-day races of the season, the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix, earlier this month. A decision will be made by the Belgian federation's disciplinary committee on May 7.
