Hi All

first post, so be gentle please :)

im shopping for my first road bike. I had a couple of hours on a specialized allez and decided id like to go just a touch more comfortable.

i seem to have settled on the defy range due to the good write ups for being comfortable and seemingly decent kit on offer.

my question is, if im spending 900 on a bike to get the defy 1, is the extra 100 a no brainer or is the extra kit just bling.

(from the write up it looks like the 0 has a different crankset (Shimano RS500 34/50 vs FSA Gossamer Pro 34/50, different brakes Shimano BR-R561 vs Tektro TK-R540 and ultegra shifters and read derailluer)

if it comes down to nothing else i prefer the blue highlights of the 1 over the 0 but that is neither here nor there.

cheers

They are both good bikes for the money, both 11sp, same frame so the ride will be the same. The extra £100 gives you the Ultegra STI's and RD, plus the Shimano crankset and brakes, though white saddle and bar tape and green accents on the frame finish.

The 0 is not really extra bling as it is not full Ultegra, the 0 is a UK model only, so they fit those components to differentiate it from the 1 and charge extra, you pay your money and take your choice. Only you can decide if the extra is worth it to you, so if you prefer the looks of the 1 go with that and with the money saved buy some 5800 105 brake calipers to replace the Tektro's.

Nearly new secondhand is worth considering. You'd be surprised how many people buy an entry level bike then sell it and take the hit on price having hardly used it. Gumtree is a good source.

This looks a good deal, and I have had loads of stuff from Winstanleys and always found them to be pretty good.

Just make sure you get the sizing right...click on the sizing guide on this link...

I find Winstanleys good too. FYI They offer 0% finance although they will add 10% onto the cost of a reduced bike (so a 25% discount would become a 15% discount on finace for example). Obviously you'd save 25% if you don't need finance. Same applies for cyclescheme.
