Duckworth/Lewis method

So in a rain affected match South Africa score 281 - 5 in 43 overs and using the Duckworth/Lewis method New Zealand have to score 298 from 43 overs !!!!!

How the f**king f**k does that work?

    Ha too true - The Age of Revolution & all that.

    I guess the theory is that SA set off thinking they had 50 overs and batted accordingly, NZ however know they have 43 and so will have the advantage of knowing they need a higher run rate because they have 7 fewer overs than expected.
    With that said, with scores regularly nearing and exceeding 400 now, surely D/L needs revisiting. Has there ever been a method that works? SA needing 20 odd off 1 ball in 92 was also a farce

    Well it takes into account that NZ know from the beginning that they are chasing their total in 43 overs, whereas South Africa are disadvantaged by not knowing their innings would be shortened until they were 38 overs in.

    EDIT: Beaten to it. The 1992 thing was different though, and part of the reason they brought in the D/L Method. Back in those days, they just removed the lowest scoring overs from the total of the team batting first, which in that case was two maidens.

    Regarding the topic, what the two above said, but also the fact that South Africa had quite a few wickets in hand. If they were 216/9 at the rain break, even a total of 280 wouldn't have increased the target to be chased. Good match... finally.

    In this case the Duckworth Lewis system worked well. SA could easily have one. That said, the best team won. Go the blackcaps!!

    It also takes account that SA still had 5 wickets left. On the whole it's a very good system when no system will be perfect.
