So I recovered my old Emmelle Ranger GT after having it stolen from outside my house years ago! needless to say it has seen better days and has been treated pretty badly while away from me! I know it was never the best bike in the world but i'm still keen to fix it up and modernise it a bit however i'm unsure what components to buy for it. I was thinking of buying new wheels and a groupset (see links below) but i'm unsure what sizes of parts I will need. Any advice would be great!

Honestly, Emmelle were the 90s equivalent of supermarket bike-shaped-object. Maybe this will inform your decision before you part with any more money:

I am aware of this tbh. I just have a bit of an emotional attachment to the old thing and do quite like the design of the frame.

If you really want to do it up, then keep it retro. Spending £400 on that bike really isn't worth it.
Have a look on ebay for an old groupset or components in good condition. You would be much better off putting the £400 towards a new or second hand bike.

    That's good advice, thanks.

    I found this one on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9-Speed-Shima ... 43d896e020

The bike currently has a 5 speed cassette but if I go a new rear wheel and brought a new bottom bracket do you think this groupset would work?

Your bike will probably have a 120mm rear hub width whereas a modern hub is 130mm - your frame will require cold-setting to work with the wider hub. Retrobike would be better for contemporary parts honestly priced - there's a lot of chancers on ebay looking for silly money for old parts.
