3x9 chainset to 2x10

Hi all,

I'd just like to check something before I spend money...... :shock:

When converting a bike to 2x10 from 3x9, keeping the original cranks for now, I would assume the the new chainrings would mount into the same positions and then allow for a bash ring to be added where the large chainring had been?
