Replacing bottom bracket? Possible gains/consequences

Having taking off my crankset to change chainrings, running my finger around the bb bearings feels grainy.

Does this suggest that I should be replacing them? And If so, what would the benefits of doing so be, and consequences of not?

Just take the seal off, clean out and regrease. If that doesn't work then the bearings are gone and time for a new bb.

Replace them when they start to click.

If you wait until click, then the bearings will have failed.
If they are feeling notchy already, then replace.
As a matter of interest, how clean/dry was that BB area? A great deal of problems users have with BB30 is allowing water to get into the bb area somehow and then forgetting to do anything about it but not forgetting to log onto forums and whinge about it.... OP note I not refer to you

Exactly. Why not get the most amount of use out of them ? I've had bearings last months longer after feeling rough/notchy.

Relube them and see what happens.
  • Just changed a BB30 for a mate and the bearings where £8 each

They can be bought cheaper. Search '6806 42x30x7mm' on ebay.
