Advice for one new to HRM training

Hello all,

I'm sure there I came across a good intro to HRM training thread here a while ago but my searches have been futile...

Having recently got an HRM, I've been looking at setting up my zones. I see some people take into account resting heart rate (Karvonen method) and others base zones just on max HR - most notably Laurens Ten Dam and Steven Abraham on Strava appear to have their zones set up not via the Karvonen method. What's the most popular way for setting up zones as a way to start off with?

Happy to be linked to previous threads where my searching has failed me.
