Hi all

Just found out I ve got a nice tax rebate having moved to NL and have about 1000 pounds that I could spend on a new road frame. I was looking at the Genesis Zero Team - http://www.genesisbikes.co.uk/bikes/roa ... o-frameset - which I like as it looks good, is a good compromise between race fit and long distance comfort and is something a bit different.

I would like to have UK frame (and I know that at 1000GBP what I'm really talking about is a UK designed, Taiwan made frame) so does anyone have any other suggestions I should look at?

Cheers Guys!

If you could spend just a little more one of the Boardman frames would be an obvious choice - more exotic in the Netherlands than in the UK perhaps?

The Genesis got an "it's alright but not sock blowing" kinda review in Cyclist, so maybe B/man?

Does it have to be carbon - some really cool Ali frames from UK makers floating around ......

How about one of the Forme Carbon framesets. Forme are a UK bike manufacturer and supplier with a good reputation.

    http://www.formebikes.co.uk/

Their carbon frames are probably, like most, made in the Far East but they do have a bit of novelty value. Spotted the frames on sale in Paul Milnes Ebay shop

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Forme-Axe-Edg ... 643cd15dbb

Can vouch for the Paul Milnes outlet as I've bought 3 frames from them over the past 2 years and can't fault them.

    Might be worth a punt.

I know you said carbon, but I do love Genesis steel frames. I have two genesis steel frames plus decent carbon and ali bikes, more often than not I'm out on my genesis.
If I had the cash it would be on a 931 CDF.
Not very helpful I know - sorry!!
With you on the Brit manufacturer, I like to do the same as well, and yep fully aware they are made elsewhere.

A review is someones opinion. Try riding the genesis and see. Also the complete spec of the bike makes a difference so to compare two or more frames the spec down to the tyres and pressure used will have to be identical. Otherwise the review is comparing apples and oranages and is meaningless. That what I think of reviews.

I Can't even find that review. The road.cc and BR reviews seem positive

Thanks for your help guys. The list has grown a tad. The trouble is with most of them is that they re custom frames so out of my price range.

clinic - the slight trouble with riding it is finding a place with one. Genesis don't import to NL, and most of the shops in BE or France sell their more utility bikes

By a complete Scott Addict from Westbrooks for £1300 and sell all the components to get you back on budget. Better than any other carbon frame that you'll get from PX, Ribble, Starley and Co.

Mekk? I had a Poggio as my first road bike and it's still doing sterling service (much upgraded) as a holiday home bike.

I think you have to go with the your gut instincts. the bike needs to fit so ensure that it does and you can tell that from looking at the geometry. Otherwise you can tell alot about the way a bike handle from it wheelbase, fork shape headt tube angle e.t.c without even sitting on it. If you can't you will need to pop over to the U.K and take a look at some bike shops and ride home. Now there's a plan for you. Ferry ride across the channel or north sea followed by rubbish weather probbaly, good beer, fish and chips buy a bike and ride home. What could be better than that. The best thing is you don't know what you will be riding home on. Think of it as an adventure.

Geometry is almost exactly the same! The chainstays are a little longer but head and seat angle are the same. It has a straight bladed fork, but anythng will be better than the pair of noodles i ve got on my current frame...

You're right. As if the ad line "Designed in the UK" wasn't clear enough that the bikes are manufactured elsewhere, mine came in a box with the word "Taiwan" in very large letters. After a slow start the bike has grown on me although I'm not entirely convinced about the quality of the matte paint job.

    Dolan?

Personally, I'd be all over this, were it a bit bigger. I think Raleigh qualifies as British. Sort of.

  • £1000 is a hard ceiling to hit b/c it's kinda low for really desirable stuff but if you like sales there are lots of things on offer.

The approach suggested by others is what I did - troll the known bucket shops like Merlin, Slane, Westbrook, Pauls to find options you might not have considered. Some examples, Pauls has the normal mod Super Six Evo frame for £899. No it's not British but it's a lot more enticing than Ribble, Graham Weigh, or Planet X.

A used Wyndymilla would be a really nice find. They're race proven and unique on the continent and British. Same with Dolan, Kinesis, Condor, Pearson, Raleigh - brands that people depend on.

Mekk, Comtat, Sabbath, Omega, Verenti, Setavento, Pinnacle, Beacon, Moda, Genesis, Orro, Forme - don't have longevity. Pull out an old Cycle Sport from 2007 or 2009 and you'll see many fly-by-night 'brands' which are now defunct. I'm not down on them, they're just not inspiring - and in my 40s, in the middle of winter, inspiration is all I have to go on.

Seems a bit strange this thread. You move from the UK to the Netherlands. You have both Canyon and Rose merely a few hours drive away from your location and you want a British bike made in Taiwan. Mmmm
  • How so? Sorry never meant to. Picking a new frame is one of life's major thrills and to be fully enjoyed. You just want to avoid ending up with a Dalkiia or Monoc (remember those?)

http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/m6b0s25p0/ ... oad-Racing Not sure what size you take but those are some mental prices on Cannondales.
    http://www.slanecycles.com/framesets-ro ... nmbr0cs487 Same here for Argon 18s etc.

If your stay in the Low Countries isn't permanent, an approach could be to get something to remind you of there once you're back here or somewhere else? There are lots of smaller fiets companies which are quite cool:

    n7even: http://www.n7evenbikes.be/
    Zannatta: http://www.zannata.be/
Koga (or, not Koga, was just joking)
Stevens are really nice as well, typical Teutonic engineering led but very tidy.

I'm not sure Canyon and Rose are somehow "more special"

Plus the Canyon frames are someway out of my budget

Dave, if you don't mind going Swiss... this is probably not the moment to tell you that I bought a BMC GF01 frame from Westbrook with gearkit for 1499 the other day, without the frame it is 899....

MR - Fine, but I don't want an endurance frame

Brett - Good spot, but BMC just don't do it for me - too much association with a Team where Careers go to die ;)

Perfect analogy for me then LOL.

Mine arrived today, there's a few items I need for it which it hasn't come with; the integrated chain catcher, and the di2 plugs. No biggy really, but trying to contact Evans (the official BMC distributor) is like trying to get blood from a stone. I've now ended up contacting a retailer in Germany....

Forme has been mentioned - this is just a Moore Large brandname

    Same with Moda

Do you really want a Emmelle ?
