Rear axle on an old 8 speed Shimano hub. There's a smoothed off (threads flattened (that's part of the design, supposed to be like that)) section off centre. Should that smoothed off part go where the cassette goes or where the wheel hub is? Thanks.

Going by the exploded diagram on this pdf the smoothed bit goes where the cassette is.

If you are you referring to the axle No 6? Then yes I would agree as shown it should be on the right, drive side of the hub assembly. Have you taken the hub apart and forgotten which way around the axle goes?

Yes, and yeah that seems to be the right way round.

    I had indeed :)
