Why do it all then? To me it is just pandering to the sensibilities of one religion in Abu Dhabi, which is only practiced by about half the population.

I think we need to adopt a global view of this financial arrangement.
The Middle East is, lest we forget, a core element of the rich tradition of football, as demonstrated by the long-overdue hosting in the near future of the World Cup by Qatar.
My own team, The Woolwich Arsenal, were fortunate recently to move out of their tattered.old library into a magnificent new stadium bearing the name of an iconic (no less) air carrier from the Middle East. I believe a team in the north west has a similar arrangement with shirt naming.
Further to all of which, we do need to remember that despite a recent (last 500 years) national leaning towards Rome, Spain has a rich Muslim/Arab/Moorish heritage which is still in evidence in the language today.
But this is no more than a trifling digression. There are many overseas footballing sides, one of whom is the Royal team of Madrid. They were even known as that during the (surprisingly long-lasting) Fascist dictatorship from the 30s to the 70s of the last century. It is just a football team - and a slightly exotic one at that. It is English football we should hold dearest to our hearts. You'd never find an English team getting into bed with a Russian mafioso, a currupt and murderous Thai politician, a former-Soviet arms dealer, a Malaysian vice & gambling hood or a pornographer. Good thing too! The chaps simply wouldn't stand for it. Bring back jumpers for goalposts. What were we talking about?
Some interesting posts in response to my OP. But what we are forgetting here is that the Cross/Crucifix is a symbol of Jesus. Who is also a very important Muslim prophet, and recognised by them for his sacrifice to mankind. Therefore why remove a symbol that does not offend the huge, huge majority of those that practice that faith? It can only be a decision made by someone who believes that it might offend. Madness in this instance and quite insulting to most muslims.
