I am buying a new Ultegra front mech and guess I'll need to split my chain. Can I buy a quick link of some kind that will work with this chain, or if not where can I buy a new link pin as I can't seem to find any.

Many thanks.

I have used an 11 speed sram quicklink without any problems.

  • A hammer, nail and 8mm full nut does the trick. Just punch the pins down, split the chain then punch the pins back in. Give it waggle after to make sure there are no stiff links.

I'm thinking this isn't the method advised by Shimano, and it's not something I would risk. If it's a joke then whoosh, straight over my head.

On 10 speed chains and above the manufacturing tolerances are tighter, and you can't reliably get away with re-using pins. If you examine a pin pushed out of such a chain you'll see you've removed a small ring of metal; that's why it takes much more effort than with an 8 or 9 speed chain.

Use Shimano joining pins or KMC Missing link or similar.

Get a quick link (at 11sp they're not recommended as reusable though) from KMC.
