I'm building up a Kinesis ATR Tripster and I'm looking for a disc wheelset that takes tubeless tyres in the 300UKP bracket. I love the look of Kinesis' own CX Crosslights, but as far as I can make out they're not tubeless. I'm not a cross rider; main use will be road and gravel. Any other ideas? Thanks J

Yep, handbuilts. Archetype and A23 will both set up tubeless and could be built onto Novatech or Shimano disc hubs for that price.

    Allround - Cotic Solaris
  • They are tubeless

Although they have recently changed the rim, so best to ask them directly... it would be silly of them to go backwards, but you never know

The archetype novatec build will be heavier but rim is in no danger of cracking either. Pay you money take the choice, light Kinesis or heavier and robust Archetype rims on novatec or shimano hubs.

I asked Kinesis whether their Crosslight CX disc (v3) wheels were "tubeless ready" a couple of weeks ago. They responded thus:
"The wheels are not tubeless ready but the tyres are. What you need is Stan's CX tubeless conversion kit

    Thanks"

Sounds like you talked to an idiot...
The rim is tubeless ready, but obviously needs to be taped and valved to be air tight

Excuse my ignorance - I thought a tubeless ready wheel just needed a tubeless tyre and valve adding to run tubeless. What makes the Kinesis rims tubeless ready, can't every rim be made into a tubeless wheel by adding the tape? *tubeless newb*

The internal profile of the rim makes it tubeless ready. Then of course if the rim is drilled in the bed, you need tubeless tape as well as the valve

Old A 23 non tubeless ready and then the newer one tubeless ready

Are the Velocity Aileron tubeless? Do you need to run them with tape?

Ah yes just seen on the velocity website they say 24mm velotape. I take it 25mm stans tape will do the job just as well?

One last question Ugo. Did you get away with 1 layer of tape, or did you have to use 2 like Stans recommend for road wheels?

1 layer is fine up to 60 PSI, over 60 you need 2 layers, so for road tyres is two

  • just want to check that for the Kenesis CX Disc - the 25mm Stan's tape + some tubeless valves is the way to go?
    - pretty sure this is right, just wanted to confirm the 25mm tape is what i want and not the conversion rim strip kit with universal tape

find it a little confusing that stan's also sell "universal tape" for use with their conversion rim strips (afaik rim strips with valves attached) i thought the yellow tape + separate tubeless valves was pretty standard now.

Ugo will confirm but I don't think you need any tape!

    Facebook? No. Just say no.
  • surely you would need tubeless yelow tape to seal the spoke holes?

    ps. your link get redirected.

edit: if you tape off the v and the end of the url it works.

the picture shows the black cloth rim strip i believe
  • You need tubeless tape... the width depends on the inner width of the rim... if it's 19 mm or more, then go for 25, if it's less, then go for the 20 mm one
