SS chainring help

Have a problem.

Ride a 2011 Kona Paddywaggon (some of you may have seen).

It's an SS, with 42x16 gearing.

That gearing is very small (some of you may have seen).

I would like to stick a 46 chainring on it.

However, it turns out, my cranks, FSA Tempo cranks, are actually made for geared bikes, not SS, so they fit 130bcd chainrings, not the track standard 144bcd.

I'm not sure what the cheapest/best option would be to achieve my desired gearing.

Can someone who knows about this stuff ( I don't) help?

--

Separately, the rear sprocket (which looks I think like a BMX one but I don't really know) is very worn.

No idea how to go about replacing that either.

Cheapest would be to change the sprocket

Just work it out with chainring/sprocket multiples
    You have a 42x16 (2.625x)
    You want a 46x16 (2.875x)

So a 42x15 would be 2.8x (bit lower gear than 46/16)
And a 42x14 would be 3x (bit higher gear than 46/16)

If either of those ratios suit then that'd be the cheaper option.

That said, could be tough to find a 14t freewheel...

Would the fact it's not a specific SS chainring explain that I need the chain bloody tight to stop it slipping off?

    Or is that marketing BS?

Is it worth ditching the budget FSA crankset and going to a proper track 144bcd setup?

Realistically I need a new chain & sprocket whatever happens, as well as a new chainring...
  • Have the Paddy Wagon as well, quick google implies that you cant fit 14t freewheel onto a standard singlespeed hub. As size of the hub and then freewheel mechanism make the outer circumference too large for 14t.

btw never had an issue with losing the chain off the front chainring!

The vast majority of single speed chainrings will be 130. Both my SS/fixed bike came with that

Sounds highly credible. I'm using a single chainring with no front mech for CX, and that requires a special chainring (where alternate teeth are wider to accomodate the wider gap in the chain) and a higher spring tension on the rear mech.

Standard chainrings are specifically designed to drop the chain easily to enable you to shift.

    For 1/8‘‘ (3.17mm) track chain.

If your current chainring is a roadie one, is your chain 3/32"?

    You can't use 3/32" on 1 1/8"

Check Velo Solo, you can pick pretty much any combo http://www.velosolo.co.uk/shopcrank.html and the first one is available in 3/32" 46t 130 BCD.

Depending on current wear, replacing the chainring, cog/freewheel and chain is a good idea otherwise it could sound like a chainsaw.

yep velosolo every time, its meant for FGSS look at the teeth pattern, no ramps for shifting, thicker and looks more hipster which is of course the main reason for riding FGSS 8)

Read it off the side of the chain most likely ;)

That would require the chain not being so filthy that you can read stuff on the side I guess?

    Hmm..

its easy to tell, does the chain look like you could use it to anchor a ship?

if yes then its 1/8th otherwise its most likely 32. I was totally shocked at the weight of even a good 1/8th chain, Miche track chain btw - awesome strong and never seems to need replacing.

You should do the same, given the only time you get on a bike these days is to ride it to work...

I get to ride it back as well :).

Looking at schools last weekend, so no hill climb. Then a lunch had been arranged for Sunday at a well-known venue near me, which was a bit gutting because I missed out on a CX race for the privilege of experiencing woeful service. Not. Happy....

50T would be 110 BCD so not compatible but yes I'd be inclined to go bigger 52/17 or 18,19

Happy memories of the big ring wars.

It amazes me that someone with over 23,000 posts in less than five years knows so little about bikes.

On the chain, I have a 2011, I think, version. The same colour scheme as the one in the link below. It definitely came with 3/32.
