Rear mech/hanger - advice needed!

Hi All,
I've got a Kona Splice 29er 2012 http://www.evanscycles.com/products/kona/splice-2012-29er-mountain-bike-ec034518 and yesterday the rear mech managed to bend into the spokes and bring my ride to a sudden crunching halt.
I went to Halfords this morning and they advised me that my rear mech and hanger are both bent and in need of replacing. I have a couple of questions:
1: Are rear mechs universal? Do I just need to go for a Shimano Acera SGS or could I spend a bit more and get something like the Shimano Alivio M410 and do a like-for-like swap? I want to get the best for my buck but don't want to start having to replace other components to accommodate the new mech
2: It looks like I need hanger #27 for this bike, but is about £20 the right price? Are chepaer eBay ones any good? http://www.blissbikes.co.uk/31231/products/gear_hanger_no_27_for_kona_marin_and_others.aspx
Thanks in advance,

Any Shimano 7/8/9 speed long cage mech will work, so the Alivio will be fine.
For the difference in price though I would get
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod40543
For the hanger, I would buy 2 of these. (Always have a spare)

Unless you crashed or a stick or something pushed the mech into the spokes, you need to check the mech is adjusted properly. The low adjustment screw will stop it getting eaten by the spokes.I don't do smileys.

Awesome, thanks all! Will try and pick the bits up online and get a pro to fit them - if I do it it'll all end in tears.0
