Sora Groupset with 105 Rear Mech

Hi Guys,

Having some issues with my Sora Groupset, just purchased Ex Demo bike and Sora not as nice as could be.

Demo ride showed me that it was not set up correctly, so LBS adjusted, worked ok, but still seemed to work its way out of gearing.

Guys at LBS assured me as some on here did also, that set up correctly, Sora is good.

I decided to purchase demo bike and when I picked up the bike, again I was assured all was as good as can be.

53mls in and gears are already jumping, slipping and just a pain, all happening in mid gearing.

Could this just be my LBS not adjusting correctly, or a problem with the rear mech... Love the bike, but you know how it is, when riding, you do not need a gear change to be like a bag of spanners.

Help needed, as said bike great apart from this issue... As heading suggests,would changing the rear mech to 105 mech make any difference, as budget was spent on bike and upgrade so early is not an option.

    probably cable stretch, its quite common. once re adjusted im sure it will be right, if its all new its just a case of setting it up correctly

    I'd reiterate what others have said, Sora is fine. Cable stretch is a good shout.

    ***DO NOT TOUCH THE HIGH AND LOW LIMIT SCREWS***

    Give the barrel adjuster (at the back of the mech where the cable enters) a quarter-turn tweak (to tighten the cable) and give it a ride up the street. If necessary, another quarter-turn and another test ride. Keep a track of where you start on the barrel adjuster and how many turns - be methodical.

    Agree with the advice given above, here is a video from the Bike Radar youtube channel I used to check the indexing on my RD, it helps to also have a good manual that walks you through the steps. I have several and the Park Tool Co, Big Blue Book is a good start. Lennard Zinn has several, also.

    Thanks guys, appreciate the helpful comments and the links to the video's...

    Something I should know, but have taken it for granted that a good service from my LBS should be good enough, new bike and more miles means I should know how to adjust...

    I now know how to adjust Disc Brakes, so never know, might get good at tinkering soon enough ;)

    Away on business for a couple of days, I will get straight on it when back Wednesday evening and let you know how it turns out :)

    Throw money at it with a 105 rear mech and it'll make no difference at all

    Set it up correctly however, and it'll be fine

    OK, thanks for all the comments, I have not bothered with adding to the Groupset, but followed the video, set up and got it working well.

    But as always, after a couple of rides it seems to unset itself and starts to become clunky and getting in to gear a mare... You know how it is, makes your ride painful. This is what has happened a couple of times with the LBS setting it up twice now and it works it's way out of sync.

    Is this standard, or could there be another issue?

    Could be the cable itself. I've spent many hours trying to perfect gear indexing only to find out the cable has frayed inside the shifter. I'd give that a look.

    Also, how often are you cleaning the bike/lubing the chain? I used to neglect mine and if you don't keep on top it can soon become un-ridable. Quick clean and lube once a week should keep it going.

    It's not standard at all of course. It's worth getting the cabling replaced (inners and outers) then at the very least you've eliminated that as a source of the issue.

    The bike was purchased only 3 weeks ago, it was an ex demo, but I was told it had only been used 7 times.

    I will have another chat to my LBS, as even my cheap Groupset on my hybrid works well and was fitted about a year back and no adjustment needed...

    Just a pain and makes long rides a pain....

    Roubaix at the LBS. I am away on business till Friday afternoon, so told them to have a long hard look at it and please sort it out.

    Cables, rear mech, check the lot, if still problem, please change it :)
