Hi all
Recently been working a lot on endurance/distance rides with plenty of climbs, started to include my 15 mile commute to and from work too. Its been going well until this morning!!!
Rode home last night with no issues, and managed it in exactly the same time as I did on the way to work (was expecting slightly slower after a 10hr shift!) walked my dog for 45 mins to 'warm down' followed by my usual protein recovery drink and felt fine.
Had a slightly sleepless night with pain in my right knee, woke today to severe pain in said knee!! Tried walking the dog but gave up by the end of the street. Feels like the joint is full of gravel and if I cup it with my hand whilst moving it I can feel some serious clicking and graunching going on!! There is a constant dull ache there now with some severe 'stabbing' type pains every now and then. Needless to say, I haven't made it into work today.
Bike is a 29er hardtail (not that that really matters i'm sure)
Anyone experienced similar?
Cheers
James

Crunching and grinding is never a good sign. It can be anything from Osteoarthritis (wear and tear) to a Torn Meniscus. Best bet is to get to your GP and get a Referal to a Orthopaedic Specialist, or for a MR scan of the knee.
Did you sufferer a trauma or change anything on the bike before the pain started?

Either way you need to see a Orthopod asap.
  • Thanks, I haven't changed anything on the bike recently. I have been riding a lot more/harder though.

I recently posted a similar thread after having issues similar to yours (minus the crunching/grinding) after over training and never before feeling pains in knees. Times a great healer I looked at all sorts of strange named things trying to diagnose the problem myself but all that was needed was 8 weeks off the bike and trying to keep strains off your knees.

Day to day working life is normal now finally after 6 weeks and I went for my first ride after 8 weeks of first getting the pains and had no problems. So my advice if you think you have a over training strain is to take the hit and stay off the bike for a while until 0 pains then ease back into biking.

This is the best advice see a medical professional (GP). You can do a lot of damage to your knees if over training and also on a bike that is not setup accurately for you. This is more obvious on intense, lengthy road rides where you are stuck in the same riding position a lot more. In off road mountain biking you tend to move around a lot more on the bike which reduces the problem.
