What are the first signs that these need an overhaul? Woolly shifting on the rear mech can be down to many things but is there a symptom that points to the shifter?
Is any lubrication necessary and if so where?

Generally speaking you don't need to do anything. There isn't a real need for lubrication.... most of the problems come from the cable outer

Does the button still have a precise click ? Mine broke, would still shift but not very precisely, indexing seemed out and the click on the button had gone so it'd just push down with little resistance. Turned out to be a broken G spring.
