The best in class seems to be the GoPro Hero 3+ black, but I was wondering if there's anything nearly as good for less money?

I know matching the GoPro would be nearly impossible but I've heard some get close

I few I'm aware of are
Sony Action Cam
Go pro hero 3+ Silver
JVC
Countour 2+

Any thoughts or recommendations?

Ive heard good things about the Contour range, and they used to be the go to before the surge of interest in GoPros.

The silver go pro is probably all the camera you'll ever need and on offer on CRC atm

I have the lowest of the three hero 3 cameras and it's excellent. Most of the extra features on the top end go pros are a bit pointless.
I have found that if I use the highest resolution and quality on mine the file sizes are enormous and it takes all day (not exaggerating) to upload anywhere.
Also, you will soon get bored of it and rarely use it.

sony AS100 appears to be better than the gopro for IQ, the AS30 is still a good buy which you can get from argos for £130 even though its advertised as an AS15. I'd go in and ask to view it first if you go that route though as the camera can't be returned
